A/n some of you may remember this book, one I have saved from a while ago. So as to try and not make you wait so long between any uploads I make for this account, I figured I would bring this one back here. This isn't to say I will upload all the chapters straight away as I do want to look them over and improve them in any way I can, and I may look into some more stories just to add some variety to this account. At least that's the plan, here's hoping it works out.

It was a dark and stormy night, rain was pouring from the sky with thunder and lightning crashing and lighting up the darkness for brief moments. Storms can be the perfect representation of life: it can take a sudden turn when nobody is expecting it but still people push on through even with the crashing in the night sky. For some people life can never be easy but still they push on, struggling through the storm, just hoping to find some way for it to be easier.

Skylar's life would never be simple, it would never be normal. She had suffered at the hands of many but had somehow escaped it only to be living a life on the run, always looking over her shoulder in hopes that she hadn't been found by those who were searching for her. She didn't want them to find her, she didn't want them to hurt her any more.

Thankfully, she wasn't exactly alone, having found refuge with a kind woman who took Skylar in almost like a mother to their daughter. She wasn't the most well off person but she provided all she could and, for the time that Skylar had this home, she felt (to a certain extent) safe. Even if she had to always be cautious of others around her, she felt like she had a home but unfortunately, as her life goes, she was to lose that home in a way that added another tragedy to her life...

Skylar was making her way home through the torrential rain, rushing so as to not risk catching a cold from the sudden storm that filled the night. The heavy rain made it difficult to see, not having a hood on her coat left her with only her hands as a guard. This alone wasn't pleasant, but it seemed the thunder and rain weren't to be the only storm that rocked her life that night.

When she finally arrived home, soaked to the bone but relieved to be inside Skylar was greeted by the one she looked to as her mother. The kind woman had a smile on her face to signal that she had good news, something which Skylar was always happy to hear after the horrors she suffered through in the past.

"I managed to find a school that would take you in, it was complicated due to circumstances, but I managed to succeed, however, it would mean you would have to leave me" her "mother" told her and Skylar's smile quickly fell, the idea of leaving the only stability in her live giving her pause. It was a conflicting situation as though she would be able to blend into a school environment, Skylar didn't want to leave the only person she had to care for her.

"But..." She went to protest only to be cut off by the older woman who said it was for the best. "We don't want them to find you, I'm happy to set you free, giving you your name and acting as your mother for so long has been a joy to me, Skylar" she said with a smile, brushing a soft hand over her daughter's cheek to try and alleviate any worry. She had tears in her own eyes, but she was doing what she felt best for the girl she had secretly raised. And then she reached her hand to Skylar's; raising it and slipping a piece of paper into her palm, she told her again that it was for the best.

Opening her mouth to protest again, Skylar only fell silent and acted to embrace her mother. Whispering in a shaking voice, she thanked her for everything she had done, saying she would always be grateful and her mother smiled as she held back her own tears. But then the tender moment was interrupted by a bang at the front door.

It was loud, signalling that it was kicked in and it didn't take a genius to know who it was. "You have to go, now!" Skylar's mother insisted, much to obvious protest. "They can't find you, go!" Skylar was ushered to the back of the one story house and was being helped through a window, but her escape wasn't quick enough as she had been seen.

"I found it! It's escaping through the back!" A man in a suit shouted and Skylar was shoved through the window by her mother so she could escape, being told to run and immediately she took off. But the sounds of thunder, lightning and rainfall weren't enough to mask the loud bang of a gunshot and it made Skylar's heart pause as she looked back. A group of men in suits were chasing after her and though she wanted to go back for her mother (even already knowing the gut wrenching truth) she had to run.

And so she did. Skylar ran as the suited men gave chase and they were quickly gaining grounds even with her head start. One of them got within arm's reach, managing to grab her wrist which made her flinch; "No! Stay away from me!" She shouted as she snatched her arm out of the man's grasp before thrusting her hand forward.

It wasn't a shove which caused the group to scatter, instead it was the burst of lightning which erupted from Skylar's hand. It caused the group to dive out of the way, giving her the opportunity to gain some distance as she quickly took off again. However, Skylar wasn't in the clear.

Obviously there were more people searching for her as well as the group who were chasing her, she could hear them as the rain provided a vein cover for her to try and find a place to hide. The only place she could find was an alleyway and she quickly ducked into it with the hopes she could shake off her pursuers, but there was an issue with this plan. It was a deadend, and one of her suited men also made the decision to look in the alleyway and trapped her.

"I found the subject, bringing it in" the man spoke into a radio, Skylar wincing at being referred to as an "it" and her momentary loss of focus made her trip and crawl backwards. "You caused a lot of trouble," the man said as he got closer to Skylar, reaching down to grab her only to flinch as he was zapped by a spark that flickered in her hand.

"You bitch! Come here!" He spat as he went to approach again only for more lightning to hit him, but this time not a spark. Skylar acted impulsively as her hands thrust forward again, then she watched as the man convulsed from the lightning blast she hit him with, unintentionally killing him as she sent too strong a blast that wasn't exactly helped by the rainfall.

"Oh god" Skylar whimpered as the man fell dead before she scrambled to her feet. She couldn't stick around, especially as she saw more men in suits round the corner to the alleyway and so she took off running. She was panicked for obvious reasons but she had to keep running. Her mother was dead, the gunshot was proof enough, and Skylar was now on her own again. The least she could do was to keep to what her mother had done for her, she had to hide away in the area where she was enrolled into the school of.

It would be dangerous but at least she would be able to blend into a school background. Her mother did say that it wasn't easy to get her that place, there were certain complications surrounding her past after all, so she couldn't squander this chance. And so Skylar ran, she pushed through the storm to make as much distance as she could before finding some shelter from the rain once she was sure she wasn't being followed anymore.

During this breathing moment, Skylar looked at the paper which she was given (it somehow still being intact) to find directions to the area in which her new school would be. There were also details of an account where some funds were set aside for her, enough for Skylar to make accommodations for some time and it made her stomach turn to see the number which her mother had put aside for her. They didn't have a lot of money, only enough to get by, and yet her mother saved to get her to safety in secrecy.

"Mum" Skylar's voice cracked, thinking how the woman really did think of everything, risking everything and sacrificing it all to help her. Tears stung Skylar's eyes as she promised not to waste this effort, thinking of the woman who raised her. She didn't know her real mother so the woman who took her in was the best substitute she had, and now she was dead. "I'm sorry, it's my fault" Skylar whimpered before shaking her head and telling herself she had to move.

And so Skylar continued to walk through the night, the rain remaining heavy but which she used as cover as she pushed through the storm. She had a long way to go, her destination being the next town over, and there she would do her best to lay low. There, she may finally have a chance to just live her life in secrecy, even if it meant she would be alone.

Or so she assumed that would be her life now.
