The sound of gravel beneath your vehicle's rubber tires crackles as you roam through the rough landscape. You typically preferred to stay on the smooth paved roads, but the quickest way to your next destination was through dirt ones in the woods. You couldn't remember the last time you took a stop to eat or drink, but it was certain you would be in dire need of one eventually. A low rumbling could be heard from your stomach, and you frown slightly knowing there might not be any food soon.
It was hard to not have food for yourself, but knowing you had two mouths to feed made it all the more worse. Sat next to you in the passenger seat was your dog, a gorgeous large and furry german shepherd. You felt guilty each time you stared into his sad, hungry eyes. The guilt was dreadful compared to any hunger pains you endured.
You come to a stop as you reach a crossroad, and look around in both directions.
"God damn, all these trees look the same around here," you open your glove compartment and pull out the old map you've been using to get around. After gently unfolding it, you squint your eyes to find the road you need to take.
"Ah there we go, so I need to take a.... Left." You slowly take your foot off the brake, gently turning the wheel with your right hand, map held in your left. You look over to your sleeping shepherd, "Almost there, buddy." A sigh exiting your lungs.
Your truck kept a decent speed, especially for one you found out in the apocalypse. You keep a keen eye on the road, watching for walkers, as the greens and browns of the forest all blur together in your peripheral vision. Honestly, you didn't even know where you were going half the time, or why you were going there. Some part of you just told you that you needed to go; drive as far away from everywhere as possible.
You'd gotten a pretty good ways into the forest, and had been driving for about forty minutes when suddenly you heard a loud pop. You immediately press on the brakes and pull the car into park.
"Shit, shit, shit..." You mumble to yourself as you unbuckle your seatbelt.
You take a brief peek out the windows to make sure there's no walkers around, and then hop out of the driver's seat. You look down at the first front tire, then the first back tire, both fine. But then move to the passenger side to see the back tire slightly deflated.
You let out a hefty sigh, placing your fingers on your temple and lazily sliding your hand down your face. You kneel down to inspect what popped your tired, a single stupid rusted nail. You curse under your breath before walking back to the drivers side of the truck and climbing in. You pick up your map again, looking for any building nearby that could maybe have either something you could patch up your tire with or a spare one. The only building within a walking distance is a boarding school.
"Ericson's Boarding School for Troubled Youth, huh.." You take a quick moment to think about what exactly to do, and the possible outcomes. But then you realize there truly isn't anything else to do but this.
You gently pet your dog, "Hey boy.. Time to go for a walk." He sits up in the seat, gently shaking off your touch, looking at you with a pure and excited smile. You smile back, as you quickly pack up anything carriable you have into your backpack, making sure to keep your crossbow readily in hand.
You hop out of the vehicle, and your dog follows. You quickly glance at your map again, it seems like this road is pretty much a straight shot to the boarding school. You try to be decently quiet, hoping the sound of your boots crunching the gravel doesn't attract any unwanted attention.
