It was around 6:30 in the morning when Jake woke up to the sound of his alarm ringing in his ear. He hadn't realised how annoying an alarm could be until now, especially when all he wanted to do was stay in bed. However, after an extra five minutes of lounging around, he finally got up when he remembered that today was his first day at his new school - so he had to actually get ready if he wanted to make a good first impression.
Jake yawned whilst slowly making his way to the kitchen where he made some toast and poured himself a cup of coffee before sitting down on one of the stools by the breakfast bar. He listened to the small chirps of the birds outside and began consuming his breakfast.
He had always liked the peacefulness of his home before the rest of his family awoke. Even when he was younger he used to get up earlier than needed just so he had some time to admire the tranquility of the morning in advance to the chaos of everyday life, (which he could hardly handle sometimes) so moments like these were necessary to him.
He quickly finished eating his toast and had his last sips of coffee prior to having a shower and getting dressed. Jake had chosen his outfit last night in order to save him the frustration of picking it on the day; he had selected a coral hoodie with some navy features, some dark grey shorts and his favourite pair of red converse. He had tried not to make himself stand out as he didn't want to create some sort of statement on the first day, however the more he looked at himself in the mirror, the more he was starting to question his decisions.
But his thoughts didn't last long as he soon noticed that the time was 7:34 - this meant that he had to leave in around 6 minutes in order to get to the bus stop for 7:45. So he brushed his hair once more, chucked a few bracelets on and packed some last minute snacks into his bag before heading for the entryway.
Jake said his goodbyes to his family and shut the heavy door behind him as he stepped outside. The sky was a crystal blue with no clouds in sight and the sun was shining brightly up above, its beams of light bouncing off all the walls in sight. As he continued to look around, he noticed the trees swaying slightly in the subtle breeze whilst the robins and sparrows sung to one another.
He continued to walk towards the bus stop and began to hope that the day ahead of him would be as great as the scenery in front of him. After what had happened in his previous school, he could only wish for something better than whatever that was. His main reason for leaving in the first place was the people - especially his ex once Jake had broken up with him because he discovered that he was being cheated on with some random girl he had never even seen before. Subsequently, this ex then threatened to out Jake to the whole school as well as his parents if he ever did anything to humiliate him again.
But before things could escalate to that level, Jake told his parents that he wasn't enjoying that school and instead wanted to transfer to a different one for new beginnings where he could leave the past behind him. It was probably for the best that his parents never found out about the truth of what really occurred.
When the bus arrived, Jake got on quickly so that he could grab a good seat near the back where it wasn't usually as crowded. He was about to put an airpod in his ear so that he could peacefully listen to music when a blond pigtailed girl in cowboy boots sat in the back empty seat next to him.
"Howdy!" She took a moment to examine him before continuing, "You must be new right? I can't remember seeing you around last year." Her texan accent was thick and almost a little intimidating at first, but it also seemed welcoming - so Jake didn't hesitate to reply.
"Yeah that's right, I decided to switch schools over the summer," he answered before taking another breath, "I thought a fresh start would be the best for me at the moment."
She nodded her head as a way to show that she understood where he was coming from and then said: "Okay so let me tell you a bit about myself! My name is Ashley, I'm 16, I live on a farm and I love horse riding," she smiled brightly and continued, "I also have 2 younger sisters and many animals back home. What about you?"
She gestured towards Jake to begin - he took a few seconds to think about what to say before taking a quick breath. "Well I'm Jacob but most people refer to me as Jake, I'm also 16, I have an older brother called Shawn and I love Chinese takeout." He made sure to emphasise that last part in order to exaggerate his love for Chinese food.
"Awesome to meet you Jake! Have you gotten your timetable by the way? I'd love to know if we're in some of the same classes." She asked enthusiastically. Jake shook his head as if he was saying no, "I haven't actually - I was going to get it from Ms Kristal before school starts today but I'd need some help getting there, would you be up to showing me where her office is?"
The bus came to its final stop and whilst they both stood up Ashley replied with: "Of course! You know you can always come to me if you ever need someone to guide you around school. Also I'm sure my friends would love to meet you - if you'd be up for it, you can come sit at my table at lunch." Jake grinned and followed her off the bus while saying thanks to her.
For the rest of their walk, they spoke about random things that came to mind and truly began bonding - so just as they approached the front gate, Jake couldn't help but think the day was off to a great start (especially because he had already made a new friend).
Let me know what you thought about it so far!!
