Chapter 2 - Ms Kristal's office

Jake and Ashley were just about to enter the school grounds when they were approached by two teachers welcoming students back after the summer holidays; one was tall (Jake estimated about 6'4) with chestnut eyes that became more hazel in the sun, mahogany hair which was a little fluffy and looked as though it hadn't been trimmed in a while, as well as naturally tanned skin that anyone would be jealous of - whereas the other had eyes the colour of emeralds, short raven hair which was mostly swept to one side,and ivory skin that had the slightest hint of peach underneath it. He was also a few inches smaller than the first.

The lankier male seemed cheery and had a wide grin on his face as he said: "Welcome back guys! Hope you all had a great summer break and managed to get that well-deserved rest you all must have needed after working so hard last year."

On the other hand, upon first impression, Jake almost thought the shorter one was basically the complete opposite to the man stood next to him. Instead of being filled with joy, he was more moody and looked as though he hated his job - it almost sounded like he was eager for another few days off to come around quickly.

"Forget rest! These kids should have been doing their homework and revision over the 6 weeks they were away, not laying around in bed scrolling mindlessly  on whatever new app it is nowadays - TikTok is it?" he grumbled whilst eyeing up his colleague sternly.

"Who are they?" Jake asked as he gave a quick glance back to the two men stood by the entrance. "Them? Oh that's Mr Trevor and Mr Derek," Ashley stated at the same time they set foot into the narrow hallways which were already teeming with grumpy teenagers (who Jake thought were a lot more like zombies than the jolly pupils the school made them out to be).  "Mr Trevor is the brunette guy and he specializes in english, however he also teaches PE from time to time - Mr Derek on the other hand is the one with piercing black eyes. He only teaches PE though, but he does help out Mr Trevor pretty often."

"Ohh okay," Jake nodded whilst trying to fully wrap his head around what she just said.

Ashley could sense his confusion so she added: "Don't worry if you can't remember names immediately! I'll make sure to assist you if needed." He let out a sigh of relief knowing that at least he had one person who he could count on - even if they hardly knew each other  yet.

"And here we are," she said and gestured towards a cedar door with a metal plaque saying 'Ms Kristal's office' on it. "Thanks for the help Ash!" he replied as he went in for a hug. Whilst they separated, she also made sure to mention that she would be sitting in the canteen at break in case he couldn't find her later.

"Well I'm going to head to my homeroom now, see you after class." Ashley waved before turning around and joining the crowd of other students lingering in the halls.

Jake then focused his attention back on the door opposite him. He took a quick breath and knocked a few times before opening it with slight hesitation.

"Come in!" a woman's voice called as Jake stepped inside.

Sat in a leather swivel chair, making some notes on her computer was the lady who Jake assumed to be Ms Kristal. Her tied up hair was just as dark as coal and her skin looked as though it was freshly spray-tanned. She took a moment to finish typing out her sentence and then spun herself round so she could face the person who had come to see her.

"Hi Ms Kristal, I'm new here and I was told to come and see you as soon as I got to school this morning so I could pick up my timetable?" Jake questioned, still being stood by the door behind him. "New student?" she thought to herself for a second before asking: "What's your name?"

"Oh it's Jacob Hamilton but I really only go by Jake." He responded just as she turned back towards her computer and began typing again.

"Ah here you are! I'm going to print off your schedule so why don't you take a seat for now," she said while gesturing back to the small leather sofa opposite her desk where Jake then sat down.  "Okay Jake, just while that is being sorted, let me explain to you how a typical day here works: form time starts at 8:30 however doors open at 8:00, so we expect you to arrive some time between 8:00 and 8:30 in order to prevent the chances of you being late." She paused so that she could inhale a bit of air before continuing.

"Form is in your 'homeroom' and lasts 20 minutes, so 8:50 is then when your first lesson begins - each class is 1 hour long by the way which means that your second lesson is at 9:50 and ends at 10:50 when break commences." Jake nodded as she carried on.

"Break time is when you might want to go toilet, have a snack or fill up your water bottle as you won't be able to do so in class. After that is period 3 at 11:10 and period 4 an hour later which then leads to lunch starting at 13:10 and finishing at 14:00 for your final lesson of the day."

She then handed Jake his freshly printed and slightly warm timetable.  "So have you got any questions you want me to answer?"

He searched through his mind for something to say before asking: "How do lockers work here?"

"Good question! Your locker will be near your homeroom with the rest of your tutor group's - this is so that they are easy to access before school starts in case you want to grab some books you might need for the day or put your PE kit away etc." She then gave him a polite smile as if to say 'anything else?', so in order to avoid things getting awkward, he thanked her for her time whilst getting up out of his seat and headed for the exit so he could make his way to class.

But just as he was reaching for the door handle, he realized that he actually had no idea where he was meant to go.

Foolishly, he spun back around and then said: "Wait miss, where is my homeroom?"
