"When you meet the other half of your soul, you'll understand why it didn't work out with anyone else."

The morning sun poured through the windshield as we cruised along the coast road toward the festival.

Rose was sitting in the passenger seat, both her legs comfortably sprawled across my lap, her toes nudging me now and then as if reminding me she was right there.

Not that I minded one bit.

Her head leaned against the window as she sipped on a juice box with a dreamy little smile, looking like the cutest, most content kid.

She wiggled her toes against my jeans stifling a giggle, and she took another sip, her cheeks puffed out in that adorable way that always made me want to kiss her.

So damn cute.

I gave her thigh a gentle squeeze glancing back at the road, smiling to myself, fingers tracing along her leg.

I couldn't help but steal glances at her, taking in her outfit-a golden, crochet dress that hugged her in all the right ways, falling just above her knees and swaying gently whenever she shifted.

Frankly, it was dangerously distracting.

She looked...like she was straight out of a sunny, dreamlike picture and for the thousandth time, I wondered how I'd gotten her.

Her voice broke into my thoughts, and I turned to see her staring at me with wide, curious eyes. "Do you think there'll be, like, real Vikings there?"

"With shields and axes and everything?" She was fully invested, like she half-expected a horde of fierce warriors waiting for us.

I couldn't resist. "Oh, definitely. Vikings with swords, axes-probably even a dragon or two. I bet they're on high alert for girls like you. If one kidnaps you, I'll negotiate your release."

"Hey! I don't wanna get kidnapped by some pretend Viking," she muttered, scrunching her nose. "Besides, I have my very own knight, right?"

Her eyes were so earnest, like I was actually some hero instead of just me-some guy who happened to know her every mood, her every little thought.

Damn. If she only knew.

"Right, your own personal knight," I murmured, sliding my fingers down her calf, savoring how she squirmed a little under the touch. "But, you know, knights get tired saving princesses all the time. Maybe I'll let one of those Viking lads borrow you for a bit. I could use a break."
