The car's engine thrummed softly, vibrating through the seat beneath me as I sat stiffly behind the wheel. My fingers gripped the steering so tightly that my knuckles had turned white.
"Relax," Aadam's voice came from beside me, low and amused. I turned to glance at him, sitting there in the passenger seat arms crossed, watching me like a hawk.
His lips were curved into that teasing smirk he always wore when he was up to something. "It's a car, not a wild horse. It's not going to bolt on you."
"Easy for you to say! You're not the one driving for the first time." I whined, my fingers fiddling with the buttons on my blouse as a nervous habit.
My skirt rode up slightly as I shifted in my seat, but I tried not to think about how Aadam's gaze seemed to linger just a bit too long when I first climbed into the car.
He snorted, running a hand through his hair. "Driving? Is that what you're calling this?" He gestured to the gear stick. "You haven't even shifted out of neutral yet. We've been sitting here for ten minutes."
I shot him a glare, my cheeks heating. "I'm building up my courage, okay? It's not like I've done this before."
"Obviously," he said, his smirk widening as he pulled out his phone and pointed it at me. "Hold on. Let me capture this historic moment—Lady Lancaster, taking her first steps toward destroying a perfectly good car."
"What? No!" I squeaked, my hands flying off the wheel to try and grab his phone. He leaned back, holding it out of reach as he laughed.
"Just kidding! I'm just recording for posterity. Your dad's going to want to see how his precious daughter is learning to drive."
I groaned, my face burning. "You're the worst, Callahan! Put that thing away!"
"Not a chance," he said, angling the phone to get a better view of me. "Look at you, all dressed up like you're going to a fashion show instead of a driving lesson. Who wears a skirt that short to drive?"
I crossed my arms over my chest, glaring at him. "I thought you'd like it," I muttered, my voice barely above a whisper. "But clearly, you're too busy being mean to notice."
He paused, lowering the phone slightly to look at me. "Trust me, I noticed. But that doesn't mean I'm going to go easy on you."
I swallowed hard, my heart fluttering at his tone. Before I could say anything, he was back to his playful self, raising the phone again. "Alright, let's see what you've got. Start the car, foot on the clutch, and for the love of all that's holy, don't forget the brake this time."
