Maria, Mr. Abraham's daughter, was on my mind as I gathered my belongings and headed down the stairs. Mrs. Abraham and her husband awaited me in their lounge, with what appeared to be a box of cookies and another box I didn't recognize. As I leaned forward to greet the lady with the beautiful smile and sparkling eyes, I inhaled the strong vanilla scent and realized it was a cake.
"Ah, once again, it breaks my heart to see and feel that moment when they treated me like their daughter. I mean, forget me, but the fact that she was alive for them in that moment, her memories refreshed, their brain cells active to retrace every detail with my every move around them. It felt bad. It felt deep."
The couple, these two strangers, were teaching me valuable lessons, and I felt overwhelmed, thinking it was all too much for me to take in. I assembled my emotions and senses, reminding myself they were strangers, and I had no right to form such a connection that might cause them pain.
As I prepared to leave, Mr. Abraham gazed out at my car and said, "You know, I couldn't help but notice your car could use a good cleaning. It's a shame, really. I would have done it for you, for free!" He chuckled warmly. "But I suppose you're not staying any longer, too bad."
I smiled and replied, "It's okay, you've already done a lot. Please take care of your lady and your health too."
Mr. Abraham nodded, his eyes twinkling. "We will, we will. And don't forget to take care of yourself on the road. Drive safely!"
I bid them goodbye and settled into my car, feeling like a free bird as I hit the road.
The couple watched me leave through their gates, a moment reminiscent of my own family's goodbyes. I missed them, and in that moment, I made space in my heart for the Abrahams.
Though I tried to resist, I couldn't deny the bonding disorder that had taken hold.
