"Nikkah karogi mujhse?"
(Will you marry me?)
And just like that, Sahar spilled the tea she had just taken a sip of.
As if expecting the action, Mustafa was quick to pick the cushion that lay next to him. He held it in front of his face, closing his eyes at the utter silence that surrounded them once again.
The tea that was spilled on the crème coloured cushion met Sahar's wide eyes, and now she had another reason to add to the never ending list of Mustafa's misdoings.
"Get out."
Sahar grit the words, wiping the tea that spilled from her lips with a tissue. Mustafa sighed, expecting that too.
"Ek bar baat sun lo."
(Just listen to me once.)
His words held an underlying plea, afraid that if he let go of the chance to speak today, their already delayed union would wait longer, leaving one of them surrounded in doubt.
He knew his decision to not contact her for the past two years hurt her. It hurt him too.
But he wouldn't dream of hurting her without a benefitting cause.
Sahar glared at him, but nonetheless stayed quiet, indicating that she was listening to whatever he had to say.
Mustafa took in a deep breath, turning his gaze away from her and to the door that he had left partially open.
"I know you're upset with me and it's understandable. But let me explain. I didn't mean to sever our contact. In a way, I actually didn't."
Sahar gave him a side-eye which he ignored. Clearing his throat, he met her eyes with a soft smile. The previous traces of nervousness had decimated, leaving him to inculcate his thoughts into words.
"I did check on you through your mother. I want you to think about it. It wasn't the most appropriate for me to contact you directly. And to talk to you would also create more problems."
Sahar's glare eased, her eyes softened at the conflicted look on his face.
"If I talked to you, and heard your voice, it'd have increased the sense of longing. It'd have enhanced your missing presence around me. It was a selfish decision, but I know you would've felt the same. Aapki ammi ne har dafa aap ka haal mujhe bataya hai. And-"
(Your mother has always updated me about your health.)
The little narazgi that had been left in her heart melted at his words. In a way, he was right. The lack of contact with him made her divert her attention to her studies. To suppress his thoughts, she'd submerge herself in her law books and practical questions.
