__________________________________I look at the supposed college dorm I'm sharing with my best friend, Cierra. I'm basically getting claustrophobic by just standing in it. Not that my bedroom was humongous at home, it really wasn't, but at least I could reach my arms out and it still be all my own area. My fingertips reach to Cierra's loft bed. Her parents were coming with the bulk of my stuff and hers. My parents had better things to do, like get my twin sister settled into her very own apartment for college.
Was I surprised? No. I never am. There was never expected to be two kids, I was the colicky baby, she was the more attractive, athletic sister; you can take a guess on which one they favour more. My mom, Lisa Minette and Cierra's mom, Angelina Williamson, planned to have their kids as best friends. That's why they got pregnant at the same time. So when me and Evelina popped out, they immediately got to work on setting us up on play dates. Did they work? No. Evelina was spoiled, and since Cierra was also deemed conventually attractive and also had little boys making paper hearts for her she grew a rivalry against Cierra. You would expect her to have a rivalry against me, since I'm her own sister, right?
Wrong! Because what did she have to go up against? I didn't even compare to her in the eyes of our parents. So it would be useless competition.
Anyway, enough spewing about my sob story childhood- that was for my college essay. I hear the door click open and see Angelina, Toby, and Cierra. Thank god for Cierra's parents bringing all of the heavy stuff. Since I just had one of my suitcases and a bag of some clothes. Cierra's big blue eyes sparkled at the dorm like it was a 5 star suite and quickly ran over to me, basically chocking me out in a hug, suffocating me with her flowery perfume. "Mimi!!" Cierra squeals. Her smile grew as her charming dimples formed on her tan face. It was a stupid nickname we came up with in a booger filled slide in pre school- and it doesn't even make since..I don't even have an I in my name? Was I that stupid in preschool?..- Alas, we still use it.
"Cece." I laugh a bit. Holding her hands in mine as Angelina and Toby come behind Cierra. "Merletta, here's both of your suitcases. I'm pretty sure that's all of your stuff. It's great to see you again hon" Angelina muses, bright smile on her dimpled face matching Cierra's. Her bright blonde hair was neatly curled, salt water pearl necklace, Cierra had the same one a gift from Angelina for graduating. Angelina pulls me in a hug, Toby shakes my hand at first, but his blue eyes water up and he takes me and Cierra in a tight embrace instead.
"My two girls. All big and stuff now. All- adult." Toby's deep voice shakes, Angelina joining in the big group hug. Angelina and Toby were better parents than Evelina's parents. I stopped thinking of my bio parents of parents to me when they only took pictures of Evelina at graduation, a graduation party only for her. I didn't need them anyway.
I have myself. Maybe that's all I need.

Cierra blasted some Taylor swift while we set up our dorm. My music taste was whatever Cierra listened to. Since I didn't listen to that much music at all, and some of her songs were decent. "Cece do you want us to get in trouble our first day here? Why is 'shake it off' substantially more loud than any of the songs you've played" Cierra whips her head around towards me. A look of disbelief, betrayal, and to be honest, a little anger stirring in her pretty face. "Honestly, if you knew me you'd never ask me that. I'm revoking your best friend card." Cierra shakes her head in disappointment and goes back to hanging up her fairy lights; that had clothespins and photos on them.
We hear a loud wooping sound and exchanged looks. Wordlessly climbing down from our loft beds we look out in the hallway to see a group of boys tumbling down and introducing themselves to the girls. Offering to "help" if they need any with putting together furniture. They look straight out of a Disney movie- the bullies, not the main characters. Like they would shove you in a locker and give you a swirly whirly. Me and Cierra give each other a look of "Hell no" and go to shut our dorm room door but sadly one of the letterman wearing low iq nuisances spots us, his hazel eyes sparkling as he calls for his "boys".
I mentally scream. Preparing for them to try and lower their voice by twelve octaves and lean against the doorway with a corny pick up line. The group of 4 boys stalks up to us. The leader, a guy that's way too short for his ego bites his lip and draws his attention towards Cierra. "Hey pretty lady" I cringe. Yes, I do wish that some of the attention that Cierra gets will one day go to me but not mr. Voice of a plastic recorder here. "Tell you what, us boys are apart of a frat, Beta Kapa- you know. We're having a welcoming party over the weekend and..you should go." He shoves a hand in his pocket and adjusts his SnapBack. Another boy, a tall, muscular green eyed one with dark brown styled hair nudges him and points towards me.
I have to look as unamused as an underpaid childcare worker on their lunch break. I might even have a little scowl. He looks me over and turns dismissive. "Oh- and you yeah you can tag along I guess." The guy says. I quip back "we" I gesture towards Cierra and I "-don't even know any of your names." The short SnapBack leader smiles, excited to show him and his little group of teenage mutant turtle-look-a-likes. "Yo so I'm Andy, this is Jamie" he points to the guy that told him to talk to me. I flush a little at how he softly smiles at me. Andy carries on. "This is Levi, and finally Ty" Levi is a ginger guy, pooka shell necklace and deep brown eyes, Ty is a dark skin, dreads with matching pooka shells at the end of his locs, smiling while Cierra turns her attention toward Ty.
"Well, I guess I'll see you, pretty lady, at the party" Andy says again with Jamie filling in "-ladies" he corrects. I think I've turned into a vegetable, I'm so red I could be mistaken for a tomato in a food catalog. I nod with all my words stuck in my throat as Cierra looks at me knowingly.
She closes the door while we both grab each other's hands and squeal. Giggling.
