That night, as the shadows deepened and the school fell into an uneasy silence, tensions among the survivors reached a boiling point. Nora, a girl with a complicated past with Sophia, Grace, and Avery, had always been a source of discord. Her presence was a painful reminder of broken trust and failed friendships.
Avery and Nora had been inseparable for two years. Their friendship had once been a bright beacon in Avery's life. But over time, Avery began to realize how toxic Nora had become. Nora, who had once been a confidante and ally, had turned into someone who manipulated and lied. Avery, blinded by her deep loyalty, had tolerated Nora's behavior longer than she should have. Nora's constant mood swings and unwarranted outbursts had taken a toll on Avery, who had always tried to be understanding. It was only in recent times that Avery saw through Nora's facade. The lies, the manipulation, and the emotional abuse had begun to unravel, leaving Avery shattered.
Sophia and Grace, who had seen the decline in Avery's spirit, were her support system. They had their own reasons for their strained relationship with Nora, but their concern for Avery was paramount. In this chaotic zombie apocalypse, their bond had only grown stronger. They were Avery's refuge in the storm, and she was determined to protect them at all costs.
As the night wore on, Sophia noticed Nora sneaking around the classroom, her movements suspicious and furtive. Nora was raiding the supplies, taking food from students who were sound asleep. Sophia, aware of the gravity of the situation, quietly woke Grace and Avery, alerting them to the unfolding scene.
The moment Avery realized what Nora was doing, her anger surged. She had reached her breaking point. As Nora continued to gather food, oblivious to the awakening group, Avery couldn't contain herself any longer. In a swift, decisive motion, she slapped Nora across the face, her frustration and betrayal pouring out in that one act. Nora's eyes, usually so full of bravado, now burned with a mixture of anger and shock. Avery's gaze, however, was colder than ever, reflecting a storm of rage, hurt, and the deep sense of betrayal she felt.
Nora's fury erupted. "Who the hell do you think you are to slap me? Who gave you the right?" she screamed, her voice a sharp contrast to the quiet desperation of their situation.
Sophia, unable to stand by and watch, stepped forward and slapped Nora, silencing her. "Shut your mouth unless you want to become zombie food," she warned, her voice firm and unyielding.
Grace, observing the confrontation, looked at Nora with clear disgust. Nora's attempts to play the victim fell flat as Grace pulled Avery away, fearing for her friend's safety. "You're not fooling anyone," Grace said coldly.
Nora, seeing her lies unravel, tried to shift blame. "Why are you all looking at me like that? Avery told me to do it," she said, attempting to deflect the blame.
Emily, a classmate who had been quietly observing, spoke up. "Nobody asked you to steal the food. No one even mentioned it."
A boy echoed Emily's sentiment. "Yeah, no one said anything like that. So you must be lying."
Realizing that the truth was catching up with her, Nora began to play the victim. "Why are you guys blaming me? It was Avery who told me to do it!" she protested, her voice tinged with false indignation.
Grace, angered by Nora's manipulation, tried to retort, but before she could, Nora slapped her. "Since your friends slapped me, why don't you taste it too, you little—" Nora's taunt was cut off as Avery and Sophia, unable to tolerate any more, struck back. Avery punched Nora in the stomach, and Sophia slapped her face. The physical retaliation was fueled by both anger and the pressing threat of zombies trying to breach their makeshift barricade.
With the noise escalating, Sophia and a few classmates struggled to hold the front gate, which was barricaded with makeshift barriers of paper and other materials. The zombies pounded against the gate, their groans and scratching noises intensifying the panic. The front gate, once a symbol of safety, was now a point of desperate defense.
