Growing up, Siobhan dealt with an alcoholic abusive dad and an verbally abusive mom. Together, they made her life a living hell. She was an only child so she took the brunt of the abuse.
"Siobhan!" A slurred voice yelled upstairs. Siobhan hid under her bed after making it seem like she wasn't even home. Her room looked untouched and her bookbag was hidden in her closet. She tucked her knees to her chest, her heart racing.
"Siobhan Serpent!!" The voice was louder. Closer. Her door was kicked open, her father stumbling in drunkenly.
The 11 year old blonde's breath hitched and she watched his feet move around the room. He smashed things against the wall, throwing things as he searched for her. She made the mistake of whimpering in fear. The man paused before she could see him leaning down. Suddenly her feet were grabbed and she screamed in terror, kicking as she was pulled from underneath the furniture.
"I should fucking-" Hiccup. "Kill you!"
"Dad, please!! I'm sorry, I'm sorry!!" She cried.
"Really Siobhan? How stupid could you be? Thinking you could hide from us? Stupid stupid girl. Not only are you stupid, but you've gained weight. How many times have I told you to lay off the crisps? A young lady shouldn't be that fat." Her mother spoke, blowing the smoke from her cigar out into her room. "Go ahead, darling. I'll be in bed waiting on you." She blew a kiss to her husband who just hiccuped and swayed.
Suddenly the attention was back on her as her mother left the room.
The last thing she remembered was his fists hitting her face harshly. Over and over.
God, when would this end?
Years later, Siobhan had ran away from home. She was 19 now. She ran and ran until she couldn't anymore. She found herself at a train station, buying a ticket with some cash she could in her moms purse. She had enough to buy a ticket and some food.
She boarded and never looked back, flinching as the train horn blew loudly.
"Darling, you have to find your seat now as we're preparing to leave the station. Do you need some help?" The nice lady helped her find her seat and unbuckled her in gently. "There you go, darling. Let me know if you need any help, okay?"
"Thank you." She shyly spoke, looking down at her lap.
She had made it to London, the whole other side of the the UK from her old home. She was far away and now she just needed to survive.
It wasn't until she started working at a local Nursery that she thought her life was better.
She met a friend, Marjorie, who was also an apprentice like her. They bonded over that fact. Marjorie was loud and always happy. Siobahn wanted to be like her.
"Shibby, wanna sleep over at mines? We can have a few drinks and do our nails!" Marj asked, smiling brightly, her glasses slightly crooked.
"Sure." Siobhan reached up, fixing the glasses for her friend.
Marjorie was only a few inches taller but still, Siobhan had to stand on her tippy toes. She hated it. They were both short, why did she have to be shorter?
"Siobhan, can I see you in my office? Now?" Roger entered the room. The man always scared her, he reminded her of her dad in a way, he was certainly old enough.
"Yes sir." She whispered, looking at the floor. She made her way to his office, Marjorie watching nervously. She didn't like him either, he was always so rude to staff.
"Now, do you know why I called you in here?" He spoke, sitting at his desk. She could see him fiddling with something she couldn't see.
"No sir..."
"Well there's an opportunity for you to become deputy manager at the Sister Nursery. You can only except on one condition." He smirked, his icy blue eyes staring into hers.
She stood, frozen to her spot as he talked. He wanted to go out with her, of all people. She accepted. The money would be good and she needed enough to rent a flat.
"Okay.." Her voice soft. He cracked a devilish grin and dismissed her. She left the room and went back to Marjorie.
"Well? What happened?!" Marj questioned nervously.
"I'm going to be deputy manager at the sister nursery?"
"Really?! Oh gosh, I'm so happy for you, Shibby!! Congrats!! Now we really have to celebrate tonight!" Marjorie hugged her tightly and she just hugged back, not telling any other details.
From then on, Marjorie never heard from her friend again. Roger had sunken his claws into her. Her eyes lost all of their life, her demeanor changed, her personality cold and ruthless. She was no longer Shibby. Siobhan Serpent was a devil in disguise and everyone hated her for that.
She just walked with her head held high, bruises beneath her clothes.
