The morning sun cast a warm glow over the campsite as we gathered around the crackling campfire. The aroma of sizzling bacon and fresh coffee filled the air, bringing a sense of comfort and contentment. Henry noticed with concern that Evie was keeping her distance from the rest of the group. It seemed like something was bothering her. Nina, on the other hand, appeared quite uneasy, constantly looking towards the nearby woods as if she heard something troubling.
Henry seized the moment to engage Evie and Nina in conversation, adding an extra layer of warmth and harmony to the already cosy scene. It was a perfect morning to connect with friends over a hearty breakfast in the great outdoors.
"What's going on with both of you? Why do you both look so fidgety all of a sudden?" Henry pointed out their frantic movements that morning.
"Oh, it's nothing! The cold always makes me fidgety," Nina uttered sheepishly as she smiled at him.
"Nina, you love trees and forests. Tell me, what happened last night that made both of you so anxious all of a sudden?" Henry insisted on knowing what had happened.
"Please tell me you didn't see the old lady's shadow outside your tent last night, Henry?" Evie blurted out.
"An old lady? I don't think we saw anything last night. Lucas snored like a water buffalo and woke me up once or twice, but I didn't come across anything like an old lady," Henry managed to slip in a joke to lighten the mood with both of them.
"So, there was this old lady who warned us about the forest, and then she just disappeared into thin air," Nina recounted their experience from last night.
"That can't be real. Are you absolutely certain you didn't just dream it, Nina?" Henry inquired skeptically.
"I saw her too, Henry. She was definitely there one moment, and then poof, she vanished into thin air the next," Evie corroborated Nina's account.
Henry still looked doubtful as he pondered whether to believe them or not but Nina quickly interjected, "Henry, I understand it's hard for you to believe us right now, but we're not hallucinating or crazy."
"Hey, nobody is accusing you of being crazy. This hiking trail has a reputation for playing tricks on people and making them scared. Perhaps you connected the strange occurrence in the woods with the spooky stories we told around the campfire last night," "Henry replied, sceptically raising an eyebrow."
"You're basically saying we're out of our minds, Henry. Thanks a lot!" Evie retorted sarcastically as she walked away, feeling hurt.
Henry attempted to step back from Evie, eager to apologize, but before he could, Nina intervened. She reassured him not to be concerned and pledged to address the issue with Evie on her own. Nina made it clear to Henry that she would handle the situation and urged him not to disclose their conversation to Lucas.
As they stood a few yards away, the group could hear Lucas's mounting excitement as they prepared to embark on the forest trail after breakfast. He strode confidently ahead, taking the lead along the winding path and pausing frequently to capture the beauty of the surroundings through his camera lens.
Despite the occasional frustration at the frequent stops for photos, his companions appreciated Lucas's enthusiasm, knowing that it kept his usual sarcastic remarks at bay. The hiking group trudged along the winding trail, their footsteps crunching on the fallen leaves.
Suddenly, Lucas halted in his tracks and gestured for the rest to cease their chatter. Henry's curiosity piqued at the sudden break in their steady pace, and as he followed Lucas's pointed gaze, he finally spotted what had captured the leader's attention.
"Hey, do you guys see that?" Henry asked as he glanced back at Evie and Nina.
As they continued walking, both of them nodded in disbelief as they came across a group of parked cars and an ordinary-looking cabin just a few yards from the trail. Evie started feeling unsettled about what they were seeing, her senses sharpening as she took in the mysterious sight.
"I think we should turn back now. I've got a bad feeling about this," Evie said.
"Come on, Evie. You're scared now that you've seen this? Let's check if there's anyone in the cabin," Lucas replied as he continued down the trail.
"Wait a second. Why are there so many parked cars here when we're the only ones hiking this trail, Lucas?" Henry asked, making Evie's heart race.
Evie and Nina froze as a low, menacing growl echoed behind them. Before Lucas and Henry could shout a warning, a powerful force struck both of the guys, rendering them unconscious.
"We need to get out of here," Evie whispered, her voice barely audible in the oppressive silence that surrounded them. "But which way to go?"
As they stumbled forward, the dull thud of footsteps echoed behind them, sending a jolt of dread through their bodies. They were not alone. The cannibals were closing in, their hungry eyes fixed on the two unwitting intruders in their domain.
Dear reader, if you were in Evie and Nina's situation, what would you do to escape the cannibals? Would you try to find a hiding spot, set a trap, or perhaps use the forest to your advantage in some other way? 🌲🏃♀️🔥
