Alice ran out of the place without talking to anybody. One client: her first client! That's all she could do for the night: that was enough. She was overwhelmed with many different feelings.
What had she become? How could she like doing those things? How could she spur on a man like that to give her more?
Maybe women who lived in expensive apartments in the city, who met with the well-connected people of the Country, were not supposed to enjoy these rough pleasures, but she did, and she could not stop.
She searched for a taxi, but she couldn't find any. She stumbled through the streets, unsure of where she was going. Nothing was familiar to her. Now and then, above the tall buildings, she could see a half moon: a few days and that ghostly presence would be gone from the sky, only to start the cycle again.
