The peaceful days in Paradise faded like a distant dream as Jesse and Caden found themselves once again on the road, the last of their cash dwindling rapidly. They'd stretched it as far as they could, living off cheap diners and sleeping in the car more often than not, but reality was catching up fast.

"Fuck," Caden muttered, crumpling up the receipt from their latest gas station pit stop. "We're down to our last fifty bucks, cowboy."

Jesse sighed, running a hand through his disheveled hair. "Guess the honeymoon's over, huh?"

Caden's lips quirked into a sardonic smile. "Was nice while it lasted. But hey, look on the bright side - at least we're not stuck in some bullshit 9-to-5, right?"

"Yeah, because armed robbery is so much more glamorous," Jesse retorted, but there was no real bite to his words. Despite everything, he couldn't deny the thrill that coursed through him at the prospect of another job.

They drove in silence for a while, the radio crackling with static between stations. Finally, Caden spoke up. "I've been thinking. We need a big score, something to set us up for a while."

Jesse raised an eyebrow. "What did you have in mind?"

Caden's grin was all teeth. "How do you feel about banks, cowboy?"

The town of Millbrook was unremarkable in every way - just another dot on the map, a place people passed through on their way to somewhere else. Which made it perfect for what Jesse and Caden had in mind.

They spent a week casing the local bank, memorizing schedules and security patterns. It wasn't a big operation, just a small branch with minimal security. Easy pickings, or so they thought.

The night before the job, they holed up in a seedy motel on the outskirts of town. Jesse paced the small room, nervous energy radiating off him in waves.

"Would you sit the fuck down?" Caden groused from his perch on the bed. "You're making me dizzy."

Jesse shot him a glare but complied, flopping down next to him. "Sorry if I'm a little on edge. It's not like we're about to rob a fucking bank or anything."

Caden chuckled, pulling Jesse close. "Relax, pretty boy. It'll be fine. We've done this dance before, remember?"

"Yeah, but never something this big," Jesse muttered, burying his face in Caden's neck. "What if something goes wrong?"

Caden's hand came up to card through Jesse's hair, his touch soothing. "Then we do what we always do - we adapt and we survive. Together."

Jesse pulled back, meeting Caden's gaze. The intensity he saw there made his breath catch. "Promise?"

Instead of answering, Caden surged forward, capturing Jesse's lips in a searing kiss. They fell back onto the bed, hands roaming and clothes quickly discarded. It was rough and desperate, both of them seeking reassurance in the other's touch.

After, as they lay tangled in the sheets, Jesse traced idle patterns on Caden's chest. "You know," he mused, "if someone had told me a year ago that I'd be planning a bank heist with the love of my life, I'd have told them they were fucking insane."

Caden's laugh rumbled through his chest. "Life's funny that way, huh? Gotta say though, there's no one else I'd rather be on the run with."

Jesse propped himself up on an elbow, studying Caden's face in the dim light. "Yeah?"

Caden's smile was softer than Jesse had ever seen it. "Yeah, cowboy. You and me against the world, remember?"

As they drifted off to sleep, Jesse couldn't shake the feeling that tomorrow would change everything. For better or worse, their lives were about to take another sharp turn.
