Alex Harper couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. It had been weeks since he first noticed Lily Thompson’s strange behavior, and it was only getting worse. She seemed more withdrawn, more anxious, and every time he saw her with Jessica, there was a tension in the air that he couldn’t ignore.

He had tried to focus on his own life—basketball, classes, his relationship with Jessica—but no matter how hard he tried, his thoughts kept drifting back to Lily. There was something about her situation that nagged at him, a sense that she was in trouble but too scared to ask for help.

It wasn’t just her behavior that was odd, either. Jessica had also been acting differently. She was more possessive, more controlling than usual, especially when it came to Lily. Alex had noticed how Jessica would pull Lily aside in the hallways, speaking to her in hushed tones, her expression always a mix of smugness and something darker. Whenever Alex asked about it, Jessica would brush him off, claiming it was “girl stuff” and not worth his time.

But Alex wasn’t buying it. He knew Jessica well enough to recognize when she was hiding something, and this felt like one of those times.

One afternoon, after basketball practice, Alex found himself lingering in the school courtyard. He wasn’t sure what he was waiting for, but he felt a pull to stay, as if something important was about to happen. Sure enough, he soon spotted Lily making her way across the courtyard, her head down and her shoulders slumped.

Alex’s heart clenched at the sight. He wanted to go over and talk to her, but before he could make a move, Jessica appeared, intercepting Lily with a sharp command. Alex couldn’t hear what was said, but he could see the way Lily flinched, the way she obediently followed Jessica to a more secluded spot.

A surge of anger rose in Alex’s chest. He didn’t like seeing anyone treated that way, especially not someone as kind and gentle as Lily. He decided he needed to find out what was going on.

---

The next day, Alex kept a close eye on Lily and Jessica, paying attention to their interactions. During lunch, he noticed how Jessica would deliberately isolate Lily from others, keeping her close by and giving her orders under her breath. There was a look of fear in Lily’s eyes whenever Jessica was near, and it made Alex’s blood boil.

That evening, as he walked home from school, Alex’s mind raced with possibilities. What could Jessica have on Lily that would make her so scared? He knew Jessica could be ruthless when she wanted to be, but this seemed different—more calculated, more sinister.

The more he thought about it, the more certain he became that Jessica was holding something over Lily’s head, something that gave her complete control. But what could it be?

He needed to find out.

---

A few days later, Alex decided to confront Jessica about her behavior. They were hanging out at her house, and she was in the middle of telling him about the latest gossip at school when he abruptly changed the subject.

“Jess, what’s going on with you and Lily?” he asked, trying to keep his tone casual.

Jessica paused, her expression hardening for just a moment before she plastered on a sweet smile. “What do you mean?”

“You’ve been acting weird around her,” Alex pressed. “Like, more controlling than usual. What’s going on?”

Jessica laughed, though there was an edge to it. “Oh, Alex, don’t worry about Lily. She’s just helping me out with a few things. You know how shy she is—she needs someone to guide her.”

“Guide her?” Alex repeated, raising an eyebrow. “It looks more like you’re bossing her around.”

Jessica’s smile faltered, and for a brief moment, something cold and calculating flickered in her eyes. “She’s fine, Alex. She’s just a bit overwhelmed with everything going on. I’m helping her, that’s all.”

Alex wasn’t convinced. “Does she want your help? Because it doesn’t seem like it.”

Jessica’s expression darkened, and she leaned in closer to Alex, her voice dropping to a low, almost threatening tone. “Listen, Alex, you don’t need to worry about Lily. She’s fine, okay? Just stay out of it.”

Alex stared at her, taken aback by the sudden change in her demeanor. He had seen Jessica get angry before, but this was different. There was a coldness in her eyes that he hadn’t seen before, and it sent a chill down his spine.

“Fine,” he said slowly, backing off for now. “But if I find out something’s going on, I’m not just going to stand by and do nothing.”

Jessica’s smile returned, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “There’s nothing to find out, babe. Now, let’s not waste time talking about Lily. We’ve got better things to do.”

But Alex couldn’t shake the feeling that he had just brushed up against something dangerous. Jessica’s reaction had only confirmed his suspicions—something was definitely going on, and whatever it was, it wasn’t good.

---

The following week, Alex continued to keep an eye on Lily, even if it meant doing so from a distance. He noticed how she would often disappear during lunch breaks, only to return looking more stressed and worn out. He also saw how Kyle Heller, who had been spending more time with Lily recently, seemed to be growing increasingly concerned as well.

One afternoon, after school, Alex spotted Lily in the library, sitting alone at a table with her head buried in her hands. He knew he shouldn’t get involved—Jessica had made that clear—but he couldn’t just stand by and watch Lily suffer.

He approached her cautiously, unsure of how to start the conversation. “Hey, Lily,” he said softly, taking a seat across from her.

Lily looked up, startled, and quickly wiped her eyes. “Oh, hi, Alex. What are you doing here?”

“I just wanted to check on you,” Alex said, keeping his voice gentle. “You’ve seemed… different lately. Is everything okay?”

Lily hesitated, her eyes darting around as if she was afraid someone might overhear them. “I’m fine,” she said quickly, though her voice lacked conviction. “Just a bit overwhelmed with schoolwork.”

Alex could tell she was lying, but he didn’t want to push too hard. “If something’s bothering you, you can talk to me,” he offered. “I know we’re not close, but I’m here if you need someone to listen.”

Lily looked down at the table, her fingers tracing the edge of her notebook. “Thanks, Alex. But I’m okay. Really.”

Alex wanted to believe her, but the sadness in her eyes told him otherwise. He decided to let it go for now, not wanting to pressure her into revealing something she wasn’t ready to share.

“All right,” he said, standing up. “But if you ever change your mind, you know where to find me.”

Lily nodded, offering him a small, grateful smile. “Thanks.”

As Alex walked away, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was deeply wrong. He didn’t know what Jessica had on Lily, but he was determined to find out. And when he did, he would do whatever it took to make sure Lily was safe, even if it meant going up against Jessica.

For now, though, he would have to play it cool, biding his time and waiting for the right moment to act. But one thing was certain: he wasn’t going to let this go. Not when Lily was clearly in trouble.
