I blinked away the tears as I got out of bed; it had been two weeks since Ma died. Nobody came to the funeral because I couldn't afford it. I called my aunt, but she didn't answer. I looked at the twins; Ma died while giving birth, and I had to kiss my graduation goodbye—I got a scholarship but turned it down to take care of my brothers. After a quick shower, I searched for something to wear, but hunger gnawed at me. I made some ramen and was eating when a knock on the door startled me. Who could it be? No one ever came here. I opened the door, and some men in black stepped inside.
"Who are you?" I asked, eyes wide. A woman in a neatly tailored suit entered, scanning the room. "I'm Shar Woods; this is Denies Richman," she said, extending her hand. I shook it, confusion bubbling inside me as she motioned for the men to leave and closed the door. The twins started to cry, and I quickly made a bottle for them, my heart racing with uncertainty. "What could they want?" I wondered, glancing back at the strangers. I had to protect my brothers, no matter what.
"Shar, I'm here to recruit you," she said, taking up Jaquan.
"Recruit me for what?" I asked, bewildered, as she picked up Juan and handed him the other bottle.
"To work for the CIA. I see you turned down your scholarship and started hacking again." How did she know about that? The library had felt like my only refuge.
"I can't leave my brothers, and I'm not letting them get separated into some foster home."
"You don't have to worry about them. If you work for us, we'll drop the charges for hacking into the CIA database." Shit.
"If I agree to this, you drop all charges?"
"Yes," she said, putting Jaquan down.
"And I can adopt my brothers?"
"Yes. All you have to do is join the CIA. What do you say? Oh, and if you mess up, there's no deal."
"Then let's get started. First, I have to see that I can adopt my brothers. I turn eighteen tomorrow."
"Okay, good. Let's go."
"What, right now?"
"Yep. It's time to get you trained. Time is going, and we have a lot of work to do, Ms. Woods." As we stepped outside, a mix of fear and determination surged through me. I had to prove myself, not just for me but for the twins who depended on me. This was my chance to change everything, and I couldn't back down now.
