I saw this girl again, waiting for the train to come. It is always the same train, n°7134, departure at 17:30, and she is always there, waiting for it from 17:00 to the moment it arrives. She usually put her earphones, like she did today, put some music on, and wait for it. She used to smile after her days, at least I think. I have seen her smile a few times this late. Usually, she is more relax on the morning, when she takes the train of 7:15.
However, now, she looks exhausted, her gaze quite empty. I do not know if I should try to talk to her. We always take the same trains, except when she does not take it. I ever had brief talk with her, formal ones when she dropped something and I give it back to her and she says "thank you" then blush and look away. She looks timid, or at least introvert, which makes sense.
I remember the first time I saw her. It was during the end of summer. She was already wearing fall clothes and colors. Camel, light camel, natural beige, dark chocolate brown, coffee brown, natural beige, with a bit of oyster; that is what kind of colours her jacket looked like. I just tried to find what was the closest colours, but I never knew exactly. I just call it the brown panel. I like when she wears her jacket, it looks warm and makes her appear a bit smaller inside. She's average for a girl, in heights. I like how her natural hair colour looked, but she died it blond once during summer. It made her look fake, even though she looked hotter. Or was it just because of summer?
"Train number 7134, bound for Highbrook-Les-Bains, departing at 5:30 p.m., will be put on platform 3, please move away from the edge of the platform." I saw her eyes widden and startling at the announce, as if she was in her mind. I take a step back from the edge of the platform, but I saw her looking at the rails. She did not move at first, so I walked a bit closer to her. She moved away from the edge. I sighed and stopped walking to her.
It is not the first time she does that, I already saw her looking at the rails. I just do not know if she wants to jump or is just interested in it.
The train arrived and people rushed out and in. I lost her in the crowd of people, moving like a river. I cannot find this fish in that ocean.
A few days later, I finally saw her again. I wanted to talk to her, but a friend stopped me.
"Hey mate. So good to see you!" Said he. "How have you been since high school? I've heard you went to college, didn't ye?" I tried to look at her but he blocked my view. I sighed and forced myself to be polite to him. I smiled.
"Bryan, nice to see you too. My bad, I barely recognized you." I lied. "How have you been? I see you finally left video games for sports? That's amazing." I say, wanting to end that quickly. I moved on the side, so did he. He continued talking, without really caring if I wanted that. I faked to listen.
"We should go grab a drink some day, I'm sure the others would love to see you again." Said Bryan, and I looked at him, confused.
"Who?"
"Brittany, Carry, Joe... All the gang. You haven't forgot about your old team, did you?" I looked at him. I have no idea what he is talking about, those people and I were never closed.
I just smile and made myself friendly enough. "Sorry, Mate. I am tied up between work and home. But leave me your number and I'll call you back. I'm sure we can find a date for that." I won't call him.
He continued talking, apparently. But my eyes kept glancing behind him. I saw her, still there.
"Attention, please. The train now approaching platform 5 does not stop here. Please stand clear of the edge of the platform as the approaching train does not stop here!" I look at the platform number after the announce, this is our platform. I saw her legs moving a bit closer near the edge. One of her feet crossed the security line.
I quickly grab his number and leave, politely, saying I have to join a friend right now.
I walked to her, as I could hear the train. Then I ran to her, grabbing her arm and pulling her back as she tried to let herself fall on the rails. I pulled her close, hugging her. I know I shouldn't do that, but she needs it. And I want it. Then I put my hands on her shoulders and look at her, moving her chin up and looking everywhere on her face to see if she got hurt. Of course she did not. At this rate, the train could have crushed her in a second, even taking her shin off her face.
Then I saw her breathing and blinking, as if she realised what she did. "Are you alright?" I ask, worried. She looked at me.
"I am sorry." She said, shaken. Some people saw what happened, but nobody came to help her. It pisses me.
"Don't be." I told her. I used the hand on her shoulders to make her come sit on a bench with me while waiting for the train. We still have 20 minutes before the train arrives. I take a bottle of water from my bag and give it to her. "Here, take a sip." I put the bottle in her hands, she was shaking.
"I have my own bottle." She stammered, taking her own bottle after putting mine on the side. She drank a little, I could see it going down her throat,. She looked in pain while drinking, as if she was drinking poison or alcohol to forget her problems. She sighed and put it back in her bag.
I stayed there, waiting with her. We both stay silent, a heavy and weird silence. I did not push her to talk, but when the train arrived, I stayed with her. "Would you mind if I come sit with you?" I ask.
She thought for a moment, then nodded. I gave her a thankful nod and sat with her.
