The begining isn't all that great, it's a short chapter, and i'm sure there are plenty of errors, but i really enjoyed writing this chapter.
I dashed back to my still running car, hopped in and drove away as fast as the speed limit would allow. As soon as I got home I jumped out of the car, ran into the house and straight upstairs.
In my room I collapsed on my bed, face up, breathing hard. What I had just seen wasn’t possible. Except... it was, I had seen it with my own eyes, heard it with my own ears; the cold haunting voice in the woods that had told me to run; the white owl and the gray wolf.
I had to tell some one about this.
I had never been all that good at keeping secrets; especially if it was a juicy piece of gossip. Who was dating who, who was going to what party, and what big events were going on.
But this wasn’t some piece of gossip. This directly involved me, and it didn’t seem like the kind of thing I could handle on my own.
When I had run from the car into the house I had brought my backpack with me; Sensible Sophie that was me. I took my phone out of the front pocket of my backpack and dialed Maria.
She didn’t pick up the first five times but by the sixth call she had to answer. The phone was quickly picked up and Maria’s angry voice answered.
“What?”
“I have to talk to you. It’s important.”
“How important,” she asked suspiciously. She probably thought this was just an attempt to get her to talk to me. It sort of was but not actually the main reason.
This was something we had made up in sixth grade. The answers sounded silly but we were deadly serious.
“Scale of 1-10?”
“A Heart Attack.”
“Scale of skinny to fat?”
“Two more slices of cheesecake.” She was so quiet for a moment that if I hadn’t heard her breathing I would have thought she’d hung up.
“I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.” Then she did hang up. I flipped my phone shut and flung myself back onto the bed. On my back, staring up at the ceiling fan, everything seemed so normal. Too normal for all that had happened to me in the past seventy-two hours
15 min. later…
“So tell me what happened, slower this time.” I took a deep breath and started over.
“Ok, all of it started on Saturday after you left... I saw Josh go into the woods with Jim and a few other guys. I followed them.” I waited fro her to yell and didn’t have to wait long.
“You stalker, I can’t believe you followed him!”
“I was worried. Besides I wouldn’t have followed him if I hadn’t seen him carrying a bottle of something,” I said defensively. That made her shut up.
“It could have been something else altogether.” But I could hear the doubt in her voice.
I went on, “So I went to the woods and crouched behind a bush. They were drinking something and acting all drunk.”
