I'll admit, it didn't take me long to accept the fact that vampires were real. As ludicrous and unreal the idea seemed, they existed. I couldn't refute that truth, especially since I was one of them. However, as this inflamed monster of bones, feathers, and scales stood before me, I found myself doubting, for the first time, if any of the events that had transpired in the past week were real. The monster that stood before me was supposed to be a fury. A fury. Last I checked, Greek mythology was exactly that: a myth; yet here was a Greek mythological monster, standing before me, and promising she was about to kill the love of my life.
The love of my life in question was convinced we were both going to die. I wasn't entirely convinced otherwise, especially as I helplessly watched the fury pummel into Damian, screeching loudly as they burst through the window and flew towards the ground of the parking lot.
Ok, I thought in disbelief. The young girl is actually a flying monster who possesses the power to kill a vampire. Yay.
Turning quickly, I prepared to run out of the room to find the stairs to travel down in order to get to Damian, but I stopped. Matthew stood in the blown up doorway, staring at me with a mixture of remorse and indifference. Everything in me wanted to lunge at him and rip his throat out with nothing but my teeth, but a loud yell from behind me made me snap out of my bloodlust. Damian was in trouble.
Pushing away all thoughts of Matt, I quickly turned on my heel and made up my mind. Leaping from the broken window, I prayed the fall wouldn't harm me too much. After all, a fall as tall as this couldn't kill a vampire... at least I thought so.
I wasn't sure how many floors I fell down, but a sickening snap met my ears the moment my legs hit the ground. Barely registering the pain, (and vaguely wondering how vampires could levitate,) I barreled forward, trying to reach the ugly scene before me. My entire throat suddenly became dry and breathing was suddenly extremely hard to do.
The fury was flapping its wings wildly, its elongated body above Damian's prone one. Damian looked horrible– his entire face was covered in blood. One of his eyes was bruised shut and his fangs were out as more blood fell from a large cut on his lips. His head wasn't the only thing coated in blood. His shirt was practically burned off and blood was seeping down his abs. Before I could move, the cut on his lip and his bruised eye began to heal before my eyes.
Just as my heart leapt back up from the pits of despair, the fury struck Damian again. It was like watching an invisible claw swipe through the air– three long gashes sunk into Damian's pale skin, his face contorting in pain as he struggled to move away from the fury.
"I lost count of the years," the fury snarled, her voice angry and vengeful. "What a slave I was to you. The ignorance!" Another claw slashed through the air. "The impudence!" Another slash. "The audacity! How dare you, a lowly undead, trap me into a blood service? How I've longed to exact my revenge!" She raised a scaly claw above her head as if preparing to land the final blow.
"Caelia–" Damian coughed, more blood pouring from his mouth as he spoke.
"YOU DON'T GET TO CALL ME THAT!" she screeched, and then her hand swung down through the air.
"No!" I screamed, and before I could comprehend what I was doing, my body collided with the fury. Scales and feathers filled my senses as we tumbled to the ground, Caelia's outraged snarls filling the air. Gashes of pain rocketed through my body as I tried to lift myself off of Caelia's body, but she didn't wait for me to move. Instead, the air whooshed out of my lungs as a strong force imploded with my stomach, launching me across the parking lot and slamming me into the hotel building.
Cold, sticky blood ran down my head and my front as I blinked several times, trying to comprehend what had just happened. Caelia stood in front of me, not even bothering to hover in the air as she strode towards me.
