Jet-black hair slicked back, piercing blue eyes sizing her up, a sharp suit outlining his bulky frame, the tall, dark stranger exuded danger and dominance. He made her feel a strange vulnerability that, surprisingly, scared and thrilled her at the same time. Few had ever made Isabella Rossi feel that way. And honestly, it was a refreshing break from her usual routine.
Her work as a lawyer in New York City often put her in a room with powerful, arrogant men—but none, quite like this one. Tonight, she found herself sitting across from a man who seemed to be both a shark in the courtroom and a devil in disguise: Matteo Di Caprio, the renowned mafia boss.
Isabella resisted the urge to shudder when she heard his name. Though she was Italian, she knew very well who he was and his deadly reputation.
But, as this business dinner was unavoidable, she had to endure his company—at least, for tonight.
The upscale Italian restaurant bathed them in an intimate atmosphere. They sat in a dimly lit velvet booth. The nearby candlelight flickered, casting shadows on Matteo's handsome features. Though he was a known mobster, the ladies couldn't deny his undeniable charm and appeal.
The aroma of delicious Italian cuisine didn't ease Isabella's growing anxiety as her dark gaze remained unwaveringly on the man.
He flicked a knowing smile, feasting on her discomfort with that predatory intensity she found herself strangely drawn to.
"Ms. Rossi, my apologies for any discomfort I've caused you," Matteo said, a mischievous glint sparkling in his eyes.
"It seems there's an unspoken tension between us."
Isabella raised a brow. "I'm afraid you can't outwit or intimidate me, Mr. Di Caprio." She fought to keep her voice steady as her heart rate kicked into high gear, not entirely sure of how she felt about his nearness.
"Matteo, please," he insisted, enjoying their playful banter. The attraction between them sizzled in the air.
"Let me tell you a secret about myself and my family," he leaned in, dark eyes twinkling.
"We have earned our reputation the honest way."
Isabella's eyes widened at his declaration. She'd heard plenty of rumors about the Di Caprio family, but they were known for their ruthlessness, the ability to eliminate anyone that threatened their empire. It was hard to believe that the same family had the ability to run a legitimate business.
"How novel," she said dryly, her skepticism evident in her tone.
"So you're telling me that despite the Di Caprio family's blood-soaked history, you now conduct business on the level?"
"Indeed," he replied, taking a sip of his wine to mask the slight hint of amusement in his voice. "Times change, and the Di Caprios have learned to adapt."
"I find that difficult to believe," she said, crossing her arms over her chest. "The mob doesn't just change its stripes overnight."
"Then show me proof," he challenged, leaning forward, his gaze locked on hers.
