They rode home in silence, the gentle hum of the engine the only sound as the kids slept peacefully in the backseat. The city lights of Seoul flickered past, casting fleeting shadows on their faces.
"You're hiding something from me, Lisa," Jennie said quietly, her voice carrying a mix of frustration and concern.
Lisa glanced over, her eyes reflecting the dim glow of the dashboard. "What are you talking about?" she asked, trying to keep her tone neutral.
"Why is Uncle Gi Cheon here in Seoul?" she pressed, her eyes narrowing. "And why is Jisoo acting so off lately? I'm not naïve, Lisa. I notice things."
Lisa's grip on the steering wheel tightened, her knuckles paling under the strain. She took a deep breath, the weight of the unspoken truths heavy between them.
"It's not what you think," she finally said, her voice wavering. "There's just... a lot going on right now."
"Then what is it, Lisa? Tell me," Jennie demanded, her voice low but laced with anger. "I can't just sit here and do nothing!"
She glanced toward the backseat, careful not to wake the kids, but her frustration was palpable. Lisa let out a heavy sigh, trying to steady her racing thoughts. She could feel the pressure mounting, the weight of everything she hadn't said.
"Jennie, please..." Lisa whispered, trying to calm herself down. Her grip on the steering wheel was so tight it hurt. "It's complicated. I'm just trying to protect you... all of you."
"I know you've been investigating my grandfather's death," Jennie continued, her voice trembling with a mix of hurt and determination. "But can't I just help you, for once? Stop pushing me away from this!"
Her words cut through the air, making Lisa snap out of her internal turmoil. She turned sharply toward Jennie, her eyes flashing with a mix of anger and something else—fear, maybe.
"You're in charge of the kids, Jennie. Nothing more, nothing less!" Lisa's voice was firm, almost cold, as if drawing a line in the sand. "I need you to stay out of this. Why cant you just understand me!!"
Jennie was taken aback, her breath hitching as Lisa's harsh words sank in. She felt a sting in her chest, a mixture of shock and pain.
Tears welled up in her eyes, and despite her efforts to hold them back, they began to fall silently down her cheeks.
Lisa glanced over, seeing the hurt she'd caused, but she remained silent, her face a mask of resolve. The distance between them, both physical and emotional, seemed to grow with each passing second, leaving the air heavy with unspoken words.
As they pulled into the driveway, Jennie wasted no time. She hurriedly unbuckled the twins and scooped them into her arms, her movements quick but gentle.
Lisa followed, cradling Ella against her chest, her thoughts a swirl of guilt and concern.
Inside, Jennie carefully placed the twins in their bed, their tiny faces serene and unaware of the turmoil around them.
