**Summary of Part 1: The Romance**
The story begins in 1939 Italy, where Leo Marconi, a lively and optimistic Jewish-Italian man, arrives in the city of Verona with his friend Marco. Leo dreams of opening his own bookstore, but for now, he works as a waiter in his uncle's hotel. Leo is quick-witted and has a charming, humorous nature that immediately sets him apart.
During his time in Verona, Leo encounters Clara, a beautiful and kind-hearted schoolteacher who is engaged to a wealthy, but arrogant, civil servant named Carlo. Despite this, Leo is instantly smitten with Clara and begins to orchestrate "chance" meetings with her, using his cleverness and humor to win her affection.
Leo's pursuit of Clara is marked by a series of playful and imaginative episodes, such as when he pretends to be an inspector to impress her or when he catches her attention with his spontaneous and funny antics. These moments reveal Leo's belief in the magic of life and his ability to find joy in every situation, no matter how challenging.
Eventually, Clara falls in love with Leo, drawn to his infectious optimism and genuine love for life. In a dramatic gesture, Leo "rescues" Clara from her engagement to Carlo by sweeping her off her feet at a party, and the two ride away together on horseback.
The first part of the story concludes with Leo and Clara married and living a happy life together. They soon have a son, Luca, and Leo's dream of opening a bookstore becomes a reality. This part of the story is filled with warmth, humor, and the blossoming of true love, setting the stage for the more dramatic and intense events to come.
