As time passes in the concentration camp, the situation becomes increasingly dire. Despite the overwhelming hardships, Leo Marconi remains committed to keeping the illusion of the "game" alive for his son, Luca. The threat of death looms ever closer, but Leo continues to use his wit and creativity to shield Luca from the horrifying reality of their surroundings. As the camp is gripped by chaos due to the approaching Allied forces, Leo realizes that their situation is becoming more dangerous. Desperate to protect Luca, he takes even greater risks to keep the game going. He reassures Luca that they are on the brink of winning the grand prize—a real tank—if they can just hold on a little longer.
One night, as the Nazis begin to retreat and destroy evidence of their atrocities, Leo tries to find a way to reunite with Clara, who has been held in the women's section of the camp. While searching for her, Leo is caught by a Nazi guard. Knowing that Luca is watching, Leo maintains his facade of playfulness, marching comically as if he’s still participating in the game. He sends Luca a final smile before being led away.
Leo is taken to a secluded area and executed by the guards. His death is swift, and the finality of it is heartbreaking. However, his sacrifice ensures that Luca never loses hope or succumbs to the terror around him.
The following morning, the camp is liberated by American soldiers. As the Nazis flee, the surviving prisoners are freed. Luca, still clinging to the belief in the game his father created, emerges from hiding. To his amazement, he sees an American tank rolling into the camp. Believing that he has won the game, Luca excitedly approaches the tank.
The soldiers lift Luca into the tank, and he is soon reunited with Clara. Overwhelmed with joy and relief, Clara embraces Luca, who excitedly tells her about how they won the game. Though Clara knows the truth, she does not correct him, allowing Leo's final gift to their son to remain intact.
