"You're up early today; I barely beat you today." Garreth smiled at her from the bottom of the stairs.
"I know! I am very excited about my classes today!"
Today she was finally going to meet Poppy! Sure Jane had seen her around the castle and in other classes, but the girl really kept to herself. She was always there early and gone first from the room. She probably could have found a way to talk to her before now if she really tried, but why mess with a perfectly set up game sequence.
"You said you had Care of Magical Creatures right? Is that what you're so excited about?"
"Correct!! I've been really looking forward to it." She was practically jumping with excitement- a new best friend in the making AND adorable animals???
"I think Leander has Beasts this morning as well, so you'll even already have someone you know there."
"Garreth- why do you have to go and ruin my mood like that?"
The Gryffindor boy spent the whole way to breakfast apologizing- even though Jane had told him that she had been joking (well mostly). She wasn't upset with him at all, but the thought of that annoying boy in another one of her classes did damper her mood a little bit. He kept attempting to cheer her back up but she kept brushing it off- no harm no foul.
"I have wondered though, why do they schedule us like they do. I expected to have all main classes with all of the 5th year Gryffindors. I think it's kind of weird that we are both taking potions and defense against the dark arts- but only have the one class together."
Garreth shrugged "It was like that up until last year, but I guess with OWL classes they need smaller class sizes or something. I could ask my aunt if you want."
"No, it's okay. Besides, we don't want to give Professor Weasley any hope that you're actually starting to care about your education."
"Hey!" He made a pouty face at her- ugh he was so cute.
"I'm only teasing- I know you have great ambitions for yourself." She reached up and patted his head, moving her fingers around so it messied his curly locks.
"HEY!!" He swatted her hand away and she giggled. "It took me ages to do my hair this morning." He moved his hands through his red locks, moving things back into place.
"Ha, sorry. But ages you say- is there someone you're trying to impress?"
He didn't answer, instead he looked away and Jane watched his ears turn pink. Man it was just so much fun teasing him.
"Actually that's something else I've been meaning to ask you about. Do people date at Hogwarts?"
"Date? Is that an American thing?" He turned to question her, cheeks still a little pink.
"Um I guess so, but it means you're interested in someone so you have a relationship together."
"Oh so courting?"
"Yes, but not necessarily with the intent to marry. When I think of courting it's just that step of spending time together before inevitably getting married. Dating is spending time together, but you don't plan to marry them. I mean you could get married I guess if it works out, but it's not set in stone. Both parties could just end things and go be with someone else."
"Oh, yeah that happens all the time. That's what courting is."
"Really? Well I guess it's just muggles in England who are so against it." Interesting, it seemed that wizards were a lot more open minded by these things, even though it was still early history.
