RenèeAfter the successful mission and the subsequent celebration, a new rhythm settled among the team. Luca, Marko, and Luciano began spending more time at my house. It became a place where they could relax, strategize, and strengthen our bond. My home was filled with a warmth that provided a stark contrast to the tension and danger of our usual lives.
One sunny afternoon, the group gathered at my spacious backyard. My horse, Brutus, grazed lazily nearby, his sleek coat glistening in the sunlight. I watched with a mixture of amusement and curiosity as Luca and Marko attempted to approach the large, majestic horse.
"Come on, Brutus, I’m not going to hurt you," Luca said, extending his hand slowly.
Brutus snorted, flicking his tail and taking a few steps back, eyeing Luca warily.
Marko tried next, offering a handful of fresh hay. "Hey, big guy. Look, I’ve got something for you."
Brutus remained unimpressed, turning his head away and stamping a hoof in annoyance.
I chuckled, shaking my head. "He’s always been particular about who he lets near him. It’s nothing personal."
Luca threw his hands up in mock frustration. "Well, it feels personal. What’s his deal?"
I smiled, patting Brutus’s neck affectionately. "Brutus is very selective. He only lets me and Chloe get close to him."
Just then, Luciano approached, his movements calm and measured. He had been watching the interaction from a distance, a thoughtful expression on his face. Without hesitation, he extended his hand towards Brutus, who surprisingly didn’t shy away. Instead, the horse sniffed Luciano’s hand, then allowed him to gently stroke his nose.
My eyes widened in astonishment. "I can’t believe it. Brutus is letting you touch him."
Luciano gave a small, satisfied smile. "Animals can sense intention. Maybe he knows I mean no harm."
Luca and Marko watched in amazement, their attempts to get close to Brutus now seeming futile. "How does he do that?" Luca muttered, shaking his head.
Marko crossed his arms, still holding the hay. "It’s like he’s got some kind of horse whisperer thing going on."
I stepped closer to Luciano and Brutus, her curiosity piqued. "He’s never let anyone else touch him like that. What’s your secret?"
Luciano shrugged, continuing to stroke Brutus’s nose. "No secret. Just patience and respect. Animals can sense when you’re genuine."
I smiled, feeling a surge of affection for Luciano. "Well, you’ve definitely earned Brutus’s trust. And mine."
Luca and Marko exchanged glances, then burst into laughter. "Looks like we’re not the only ones you’ve charmed, Luciano," Luca teased.
Marko added, "Maybe you should give us some lessons on how to get on Brutus’s good side."
I laughed, shaking my head. "I think it’s going to take more than a few lessons."
As the afternoon wore on, the group settled into a comfortable camaraderie. We lounged in the backyard, sharing stories and jokes. I felt a deep sense of contentment being surrounded by people I cared about and trusted.
Luca leaned back in his chair, looking at Brutus, who was now nuzzling Luciano’s shoulder. "I’ve got to admit, I didn’t expect to see Luciano bonding with a horse. It’s a good look for you."
Luciano smirked, giving Brutus a final pat before joining the others. "It’s all about trust and respect. Just like with people."
I nodded, my eyes meeting Luciano’s. "You’re right. And speaking of trust, I’m glad you’re all here. This house feels more like home with you around."
