The poetry workshop room was hummed with creative energy. Sunlight streamed through large windows, casting a warm glow on the diverse faces of students aged 15 to 19. At the front stood Joliyah, a striking figure with her beautiful, voluminous curly brown afro framing her face like a halo. Her deep brown eyes sparkled with enthusiasm, and her rich caramel skin seemed to glow in the afternoon light. She wore a flowing, vibrant Ankara print dress that swished softly as she moved, the bold colors and patterns a reflection of her dynamic personality.

Joliyah's presence was both commanding and nurturing. Her voice, soft, warm and melodious as her southern accent flowed, filled the room as she guided her students through the intricacies of poetic techniques. "Poetry," she said, gesturing expressively with hands adorned with delicate gold rings, "is about more than just rhyme and meter. It's about capturing the essence of human experience, painting pictures with words that resonate in the soul."

The students hung on her every word, their notebooks open, pens poised. The room itself seemed to breathe with creativity - walls adorned with inspiring quotes and student artwork, shelves lined with well-worn poetry collections, and a large whiteboard covered in Joliyah's flowing script detailing various poetic devices.

"Now," Joliyah continued, her afro bouncing slightly as she turned her head, "who can identify some good poetic techniques we've seen today?"

Hands shot up across the room. Joliyah nodded to a freckle-faced boy in the front row, his red hair a vibrant contrast to his pale skin. As he spoke about metaphors and alliteration, Joliyah's gaze drifted to Lyra Winters, sitting attentively near the back.

Lyra's long black hair cascaded over her almond brown skin and shoulders in loose waves, and her emerald green eyes were fixed on Joliyah with unmistakable admiration. She wore an over-sized, faded band t-shirt over ripped jeans, her style a testament to her difficult background.

"Lyra," Joliyah called out, a soft smile playing on her full lips, "would you like to share your poem with the class?"

Lyra nodded, a mix of nervousness and determination crossing her face. She stood, smoothing her worn jeans with slightly trembling hands, and cleared her throat. The room fell into an anticipatory hush.

As Lyra began to read, her voice started soft but grew stronger with each line. Her words painted a vivid picture of abandonment, pain, and ultimately, victory. The raw emotion in her voice captivated the entire room, the air thick with shared empathy.

"Broken homes and shattered dreams, Echoes of love lost in silent screams. Tossed and turned on life's cruel tide, No anchor, no harbor, nowhere to hide.

But from the ashes, a phoenix rise, Strength born from tear-stained eyes. Each scar a story, each bruise a test, In survival's crucible, I am blessed."

When she finished, there was a moment of profound silence. Joliyah could see the impact on her students' faces - some wiped away tears, others sat in stunned silence, their expressions a mix of awe and understanding. Then, as if a spell had been broken, the class erupted in supportive applause.

Joliyah felt a surge of pride, her chest swelling with emotion. She'd developed a strong bond with all her students over time, and they in turn respected her impressive talent and dedication to the art of poetry. As she watched them discuss Lyra's poem, pointing out powerful metaphors and emotive language, Joliyah was transported back to her own youth.

She remembered the day she won her first Student Poetry Award in high school. The weight of the small trophy in her hands, cool metal warming to her touch. The applause of the crowd. The feeling that she had finally found her voice, a way to express the tumultuous emotions of her past. These memories kept her grounded and reminded her why she started this workshop - to create a safe, judgment-free space where young writers could express themselves freely and grow in their craft.
