A slightly stout, studious looking girl in her late twenties called Alice, circulates quietly among the tables picking up books and putting them on her cart. Everything seems completely normal and peaceful. As she walks along the library walls, behind her a few books float to other shelves mysteriously. Alice getting the feeling something is not right turns around to investigate but nothing happens. As she continues to make her way through the underground library, one of the drawers silently slides open behind the Librarian and hundreds of index cards start popping out. The Librarian continues walking unaware of the strange phenomenon that is happening behind her. She moves past another row of cabinets. Two more drawers quietly slide open, and thousands of file cards start shooting out of the open drawers just behind her, but yet again the oblivious Librarian still doesn't notice. When she finally realises what is happing behind her she screams and runs. She runs through the shelves still screaming when she slows down to catch her breath she slowly looks forward and sees the ghost causing her to let at another scream.

As this was happing, at COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY the scene changes to a dingy corridor. At the end is a door marked PARANORMAL STUDIES LABORATORY. A sign dangles from the doorknob that reads "Maid Please Make Up This Room", above from that scrawled across the door is a line of student graffiti that reads: "Venkman Burn In Hell!". Inside the office is Dr Peter Venkman with two students. Venkman is an associate professor but his rumpled suit and the manic gleam in his eyes indicate an underlying instability in his nature. Venkman is administering an ESP test to two student volunteers, a boy and a girl, who sit across the table from him separated from each other by a screen. Venkman an oblivious playboy is showing more interest towards the girl then the young boy. He turns to the male volunteer, an obnoxious sophomore, and pulls out a card from the standard deck of ESP symbols. The card shows a star symbol which only Dr Venkman can see.
He then turns to the boy "All right. What is it?" Peter asks the boy. The unknown boy actually taking this seriously concentrates hard on the card
"A square?" the sophomore answers. Venkman shakes his head "Good guess but no".
He shows the Sophomore the star card then presses a button on the table which administers a mild electric shock to the volunteer. The Sophomore twitches involuntarily as the shock passes through the electrode attached to his fingertips. Then Venkman turns to the female volunteer, a very beautiful sophomore.
"Now just clear your mind and tell me what you see" He is now holding up a card with a circle on it.
The girl also known as Jennifer looks hard at the card in his hand "Is it a star?"
