ASHLEY WAS SITTING IN THE BOOTH, her head resting against the cool surface of the microphone as she let out a deep sigh. The studio lights were dim, casting long shadows across the room, making the space feel even more isolating. She should have felt accomplished—after all, she'd spent the entire month writing this song, pouring her heart into every line. But instead, a heavy weight settled in her chest, one she couldn't quite shake.
As the music played softly in the background, she found herself lost in thought. Even after that night watching Mean Girls with the girls, laughing and joking around like old times, her mind kept drifting back to Renee. It was maddening how much space her ex still occupied in her thoughts, especially when she knew she shouldn't be thinking about her at all.
Whenever she was with Vicky, things were different. Everything felt right, solid, like they were meant to be. But the moment she was alone, with just her thoughts and her music, Renee would sneak back in, uninvited and unwelcome. It wasn't fair to Vicky. It wasn't fair to herself, either, but she couldn't seem to help it.
Now, here she was, standing in the studio, about to record a song that felt like a confession she wasn't ready to make.
