"People always say first love never lasts..."
ASHLEY SIGHED as she peeked out of the window, watching everyone take their seats, preparing for the wedding to start. She tried to steady her breathing, but the weight of her doubts pressed down on her. Am I making the right choice? The conversation with Renee echoed in her mind, leaving her more conflicted than ever. Instead of bringing clarity, it only deepened the questions that had been simmering beneath the surface.
Why do I still feel this way after five whole years? She wondered, tracing the delicate patterns on her wedding dress. Memories of the past flooded her thoughts—every laugh, every touch, every moment that had once seemed so certain. It wasn't just about Renee; it was about everything she had built with Vicky, the life they had planned together. But now, standing on the precipice of forever, she wasn't sure if she could take that final step.
Renee walked up the path with the other guests, her black dress a stark contrast to the vibrant colors around her. She could feel the tension in her chest, the kind that only tightens with each step closer to something you wish you could avoid. How did it come to this? she thought, her eyes scanning the beautifully decorated venue. It was the kind of day she had once imagined with Ashley, but now, she was here to watch someone else live out that dream.
I'm definitely going to need to get hella drunk for this, Renee thought, feeling the familiar ache of loss creeping in. She had convinced herself she could handle it, that she was here to support Ashley no matter what. But now, with the reality of the wedding just moments away, all the buried emotions were threatening to spill over.
As she took her seat among the guests, she tried to keep her focus on anything but Ashley. But her mind refused to cooperate, circling back to memories she had tried to bury. First love never lasts... but why did it still feel so present, so raw? She couldn't shake the thought that maybe, just maybe, some loves never really go away.
Inside the house, Ashley took a deep breath, trying to silence the doubts swirling in her mind. She could hear the faint murmur of the crowd outside, the distant sound of laughter and conversation. Everyone was waiting, expecting her to walk down that aisle and step into the life she had promised to share with Vicky. But now, with only moments to go, she wasn't sure if she could do it.
So why do I feel this way after five whole years? The question hung in the air, unanswered and unsettling. Ashley knew that once she walked out that door, there was no turning back. But with every second that passed, the weight of her decision pressed harder on her heart.
Is this what love is supposed to feel like? she wondered. Or am I just scared of letting go of something that once made me so happy? The future she had imagined with Vicky seemed so close, yet so distant, as if it belonged to someone else entirely.
And as the minutes ticked by, both Ashley and Renee found themselves lost in thoughts of what could have been, what was, and what might never be.
