I hear footsteps before my handle slowly turns and my grandmother gently pokes through the door. She sees me lying on the floor between all the boxes and I get up to give her a hug. "Hé, grand-mère, qu'est-ce qu'elle a dit? elle a dit que je devais y aller?" ("Hey  Grandma, what did she say? She said I have to go?") I speak so fast I'm not sure  if she understood me. Apparently she did 'cause she pulls me into a hug again and sighs. "Grand-mére?" I ask again  but she doesn't answer. I free myself from the hug and rush downstairs, seeing my mother with my pastel pink suitcase.

------------

Hours later, I find myself at the airport in Paris, texting my best friend, I tell myself that I will like it. My mother no longer has enough money to support me and pay the rent of our dream apartment in the center of Paris. I am supposed to live with my aunt May and help her with the household. I flinch when I hear the announcement for boarding for my flight. I turn on the flight mode on my phone and put it in my coat. I grab my handbag and fix my beret before I get on the airplane.

At least I have the window seat and the woman next to me seems quite nice too. "Que faites-vous à New York ?" She responds with a warm smile and a "Excuse me, I dont speak French" I notice her accent, it sounds German. I ask again "What do you do in New York?". This time she nods and says "Going on Vacation. What about you?". I tell her that I'm moving to my aunt and she nods. The rest of the flight is filled with children's laughter and snoring from elderly men.

I try to sleep but too many thoughts swirl in my head. "Will I make new friends?" "How does it feel to live in such a big city?" "I'm scared" All these thoughts I quickly push aside when I hear the announcement that we're landing. I grab my handbag and straighten my beige beret and my matching coat. I hurry to the baggage belt and as I see my suitcase I gently lift it down and leave the airport. It's warm, 10 o'clock, I'm definitely dressed too warm, I look around and see the yellow convertible and the my red-brown hair of my aunt.

-------------

I feel shaking and then see May's face in front of me, I must've fallen asleep. I rub my eyes, unbuckling my seatbelt. She stands in front of me with my suitcase and drags me inside her apartment. It's actually pretty nice here. She points to the room on the right of the hallway, she passes me a small smile as she says "This is your room Sweetie, make yourself at home. Dinner will be ready in a few minutes" I nod not really feeling like talking.

I started unpacking my things and just placed a picture of me and ma grand-mère on my nightstand as I hear the door crack open. I turn around and look at May.

"Dinner's ready"

"Thanks May.......Like I mean really thanks of keeping me here and stuff. My mom really appreciates it"

"No problem honey" She leads me to a room at the end of the hallway with a couch on the right, the kitchen on the left and the dining table in the middle. I'm surprised at how organised and modern it is. May chuckles and I realise I must've made a face.

"Its so modern and organised" I speak, sharing my thought with her.

"Thanks took me a long time to get back to this lifestyle"

------------

I asked her about her earlier life and we chatted for at least 2 hours. Now I'm laying on my bed tired as fuck from my jetlag. I curl into a ball, thinking about how to survive in this big mess called 'my life'. But soon I stop and slowly drift off to sleep.
