The reason was just how cute the treats were!
Haruna smiled under her mask as she admired the little macarons. Kokoa's favorite was yuzu because of the flavor, but she did admit the frosting chick face piped onto the macaron was a cute touch. Katsuro loved the raspberry one even though he hates actual raspberries. He liked it because of the axolotl face.
Haruna loved the matcha one. After over a year of sampling all the flavors, it had quickly become her favorite. She adored matcha everything and the frog face on the macaron was just the icing on the cake- or... the macaron I guess.
She glanced at Ryota's chocolate scone. It wasn't show-stoppingly gorgeous, but it was taste that mattered with scones. She paid for all the baked goods, bowed to Keiko, and left, her frilly pink box of goodies in hand.
Ryota was right behind her once he thanked the baker. She waved him off.
"T-thanks, Aiuchi-san..." he mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck nervously.
"Don't mention it," she said calmly. She was peeking into the box.
"... I didn't know you liked deserts," he said with a soft laugh.
"I don't, not really. But that bakery makes cute ones that my siblings and I like." She shrugged.
"Oh... huh." He looked down at the girl. "So, why are you talking now..? Wait, you don't have to answer-"
Haruna giggled softly. "Why? Hm~ I guess because I like you, Suzui-san!"
'What????' he thought, as his face became beet red.
"At first, I really thought you were plain... But you were still interesting. I had fun whenever I watched you gamble against Saotome-san. Every time, I rooted for you in the hopes that you'd be the one to get revenge. I guess that never happened... but I still think you're interesting nonetheless." She held out her free hand. "I want to be friends."
"Oh... that's..." he mumbled. 'I feel like I got rejected even though I didn't make a move...' "Yeah, I want to be friends too!" He smiled shakily and held out his free hand. They shook hands.
"Alright, see you tomorrow, Suzui-kun!" Haruna smiled and turned away. "Congrats on your freedom, by the way!" She rushed to her apartment, as she realized she stayed out later than normal.
Ryota stood there for a few minutes. His hand was tingling from Haruna's hand. Despite her not liking him like he had originally thought, his heart felt full. It didn't matter if they weren't romantic, he was happy that she opened her heart to him at all.

The Aiuchi children lived in a two bedroom apartment. Kokoa had one room to herself and Haruna and Katsuro roomed together, although sometimes Haruna slept on the couch if she needed time to herself.
The apartment itself was nothing special. The walls were all painted gray, the floor was either wood or tile depending if it was a kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom. The dining space and the living room were one and the same. The kitchen took only a corner of the apartment in all and had just enough counter space for Haruna to cook and the younger two to do their homework on.
Even so, Haruna loved it. It was hers and she didn't have to rely on her parents to pay rent. She had bought it with her inheritance from her maternal grandma and paid rent with all her royalties she got from books she had published(she used a pen name, of course). It was a taste of freedom and a place her siblings could healthily grow up. The parents at Katsuro's daycare whispered about how weird it was that his parents never picked him up or visited, but Katsuro was both oblivious and also couldn't care less. He hadn't even cried when he and his sisters moved. He had only cried when he thought his sisters were leaving without him.
