Tw-scars

Pluto Black

The cold September sun shone through my open windows, I knew today was the start of Hogwarts. I woke up and checked the clock that was next to my bed, ‘5.30’. After a while of contemplating, I got up and headed towards my bathroom. Once I arrived at the sink, water splashed at my face. Before, begrudgingly, looking up at the mirror. I looked sickly, my jet-black hair nicely framed my face, but that didn’t take away the sick look that I had. My eyes were sunken into my face. My usual pale skin looked even paler, my sharp cheekbones looked sharper, and my grey eyes were cold and distant. Subsequently, I got fed up looking at myself, and I wiped my face before heading back into my room. I made sure I was being quiet so as not to wake up anyone else and got out my black dress, I hated it. I took off my nightgown, my body was covered in scars. Some were more disorderly, jagged across my body, they were unintentional, left over from a childhood that I didn’t want. Some were neater, like careful plotted lines, those were intentional. These scars covered my body, across my arms, my legs, my chest, my stomach. I could not escape them. I quickly covered them, I grabbed a cardigan, making sure the scars on my arms were covered as well.

Before sitting down at my vanity to start doing my hair, I straightened it and combed it through. It was simple enough. I was starting to look more like a Black by the second. I checked the clock, ‘6.00’, still too early to do anything, Kreature hasn’t even come into my room yet. I sat back on bed for a few seconds but I couldn’t keep still. My body was itching to do something, anything. I got up and started to pack and repack my trunk for Hogwarts, making sure I had everything. I checked the time again, ‘6.10’, I only wasted 10 minutes. I tried to do what Regulus taught me to do: something I enjoy. I chose a book, A Picture of Dorian Gray, that I have already read a hundred times and started to read it. It didn’t make time pass any quicker. It actually made it slower. I put the book down not even three minutes had passed. I opened my curtains and looked into the garden. Mother kept many different plants, some safe, others not so much. I always found comfort in the gardens, especially the poisoned part, the way the vines crawled along the walls that enclosed us. The flowers grew to be tall, dwarfing even a giant. I must have spent a while staring at the garden because the next time I looked at the clock it was ‘6.30’. I always got up at 6.00 sharp but for some reason I have been getting up earlier.

A knock appeared at my door and Kreature stepped in.

“Good morning, Miss Pluto,” The house elf said, “breakfast is ready in the dining room.”
I nodded my head, “Thank you Kreature.”
Kreature nodded before leaving onto the next room, which was Regulus’. I prepared myself to head downstairs for breakfast, doing one last look in the mirror to make sure I looked perfect. When I stepped out of my room I noticed the two empty rooms across the hall, the doors were ajar, I didn’t dare go closer. I turned and walked down our grand staircase and found my way towards the dining room. I was one of the first people there aside from Narcissa.

“Cissy,” I said to her.

“Pluto,” she greeted with a small smile, “how did you sleep?”

“Okay, how did you sleep?” I asked her.

“I slept well. How’s the curse…?” Narcissa said, treading on a dangerous topic, my curse.

“The full moon is in 19 days, I have prepared myself, as usual.”

“What did the healer say?”
“They haven’t said anything, I doubt they will be called.”
Narcissa nodded, “I do hope it gets easier.”

“Hope isn’t for people like us Cissy.”
She quickly changed the subject, “you look as if you slept poorly.”
