The day was busy as always, with so many people in the street and despite it not being a holiday there was festivity. This did not help Joel at all as he was supposed to patrol the area and with his 2 hours of sleep. It would be hard to monitor things if his view was blocked by so many people.
He left his house in a rush, dragging himself to the station with very noticeable sleeping bags under his eyes. The atmosphere that he walked into at the station was grim.
"Jojo!"
An elderly woman called out to him from a stall, smiling and waving at him. She was decked out in colorful robes and jewelry and so did the stall holding bowls of rice and gumbo. The food's scent was nice and gave off warmth. His stomach growled and at that, the old lady smiled "just what I called you for, sugar."
"Mornin' Mama Creo" of course Joel would take up on that offer, her gumbo was the greatest on the block and he did skip breakfast. "You're the best." Just as he was taking a bite he looked into an alleyway and spotted something.
"Really? In broad daylight?" He immediately ran towards the alleyway, the food was left and never to be retrieved. Ahead of him were 2 teens with colored bandanas meeting up in the alley way and seemingly appearing to make a transaction.
'Need to catch them before they split' and as he struggled through the crowd and finally into the alleyway, the figures seem to have made their final transaction.
"Don't move" he pulled up to them but instead of listening the dealer did the exact opposite and started to run while the girl took off into the crowd.
"Shit."
He had to decide to go after the dealer or the buyer, of course, the dealer would be the answer. The sleep-deprived officer started chasing the dealer and in turn, they started throwing different things at him. Some of which were garbage, getting tossed on both the ground and onto Joel, which wasn't pleasant.
"You need to stop!" it felt like the person was desperate to not get caught but not because they would be sent to prison but because of something else. Something came over them, they did something they shouldn't have done. He couldn't see much of the person's face but just enough to see the terror on the kids face.
Then out of nowhere, the kid threw one of the bags that they were trying to sell at Jojo.
The bag broke open causing him to inhale the powdered substance. It was thick and hard to breathe in as if someone had just taken two rocks and bashed them together. However, it did work in making sure Jojo couldn't catch up to them as it made him struggle to breathe.
"Get back here!" he struggled to cough out, falling onto the floor. He couldn't continue going after them so instead, he tried calling for help "Code 108! I can't breathe. I tried to stop the drug dealer." But more than that he started getting a fever. He collapsed onto the ground, his last sight was seeing them disappear around the corner.
Reinforcements arrived, one of them being the officer from last night that was with him. The older officer grew worried about his partner who was laying down on the ground unconscious "10-56 Officer down! Get an ambulance code 10-57! Requesting EMS!"
'It was just supposed to be a patrol day so how did he get like this?' Officer Babineaux couldn't help but blame himself for this situation. He was his partner yet they decided to split up each other's jobs for today and he felt that Jojo couldn't handle the missing case and felt he needed something more easy for now. Quickly he moved his partner away from the area, safely covered by the dumpster. "Officer Joel seems to have been exposed to an unknown substance causing respiratory distress and unconsciousness."
