Kenma felt his stomach twist at your words. He hated seeing you like this, upset because of him. His hands clenched into fists as he fought the urge to reach out and comfort you. "I... I know it's hard. It's not good to like someone who's not interested and keeps shutting you down, right?..."
"... but don't you think it's for the better?"
Y/n understood where he was coming from "You're right, I get that."
Kenma sighed, his heart heavy with guilt and regret. He wished he could make things easier for you, but he knew that maintaining distance was the best thing to do.
"Right.. look, the bell's gonna ring soon. Let's just... focus on class and volleyball club for now, okay?"
Y/n sighs and dryly responds "Ok"
Kenma watched as you walked away, a pang of longing and regret gnawing at his heart. He knew he had done the right thing, but it didn't make it any easier to watch you struggle.
All through class, Kenma found himself unable to focus properly, his thoughts constantly drifting towards you and the upcoming volleyball practice.
~time skip~
All through volleyball practice, Y/n didn't spare Kenma a single glance.
"Ok everyone, let's clean up and go home. Good job today guys." Y/n lazily cheered.
Kenma was uncharacteristically quiet during practice, his usual focus off. He occasionally glanced your way, noticing the absence of your usual enthusiasm and constant talking. It was strange how much your presence affected him, how much he missed it when you were distant.
As you instructed everyone to clean up and go home, Kenma nodded silently and started picking up the stray volleyballs without a word.
In the meantime, Y/n decided to catch up with Koroo. He explains how Kenma told him what was going on and understood why you were keeping your distance.
Y/n and Koroo made jokes as the conversation went on, causing them to both burst out in laughter.
Kenma watched from a distance as you talked and laughed with Koroo. A pang of jealousy shot through him at how easily you smiled and laughed with someone else when you were so distant from him.
He clenched his jaw, trying to focus on picking up the volleyballs and organising them, but he couldn't help but steal glances at you and Koroo.
Y/n couldn't help but notice these glances and decided to talk with Kenma after finishing her conversation with Koroo. She walked over and asked "Is everything okay? you kept looking at me and Koroo."
Kenma quickly looked away, trying to hide the fact that he had just been caught staring. He grumbled quietly under his breath before replying.
"I'm fine. Just focused on cleaning up. And I wasn't staring at you, I was just.. staring in your direction. There's a difference." Kenma argued.
Y/n shrugs "If you say so"
Kenma's irritation rose at your calm response. He didn't understand why he was feeling so worked up just seeing you talk to Koroo. It was irrational, yet he couldn't help the jealousy brewing inside him.
"Yeah, I do say so," he muttered, a hint of irritation in his voice. He continued to pack up the equipment, his movements a little more forceful than necessary.

Y/n begins to worry about Kenma and walks up to him after practice "Hey Kenma can I talk to you real quick"
Kenma paused in his packing, his brow furrowing at your question. He looked at you for a moment before nodding. "Yeah, sure. What's up?"
"you seemed a little irritated and distracted today, is everything okay?" Y/n pondered
Kenma's shoulders slumped slightly as you brought up his behaviour. He couldn't deny that he had been a little off his game during practice, but he wasn't sure he wanted to admit why. "I'm fine," he repeated, his tone a little gruff. "Just had other things on my mind that's all."
"I'm always here if you need to talk though. I understand that we are trying to keep a distance so that I can move on but I'm still here for you and still consider you one of my best friends" Y/n answered wholeheartedly.
Kenma's heart skipped a beat at your words. He hadn't expected such a caring response when he was being so difficult. He clenched his jaw, trying to keep his emotions in check as he looked away. "Right... friends. Thanks, I appreciate it. Just... gimme some time, okay? I'm just dealing with some stuff."
"if you say so my love" Y/n ended the conversation and stood still for a second, her mind arguing back and forth. Without thinking she quickly lent forward placing a light kiss on his cheek before running out.
Kenma froze at your kiss on his cheek, the soft touch sending a jolt through his heart. He watched in surprise as you walked away, a mix of confusion and emotions swirling inside him.
He brought his hand up to his cheek, his fingers lightly tracing the spot where you had kissed him. This was not part of the plan, he thought. He was supposed to give you space so you could move on, not get all flustered when you did little affectionate gestures like that. Is this really for the better?
