The next day Y/n sat in class taking no notice of Kenma in his seat and started talking to a classmate.
Kenma observed you from his seat, noticing the way you were completely ignoring him and instead chatting with another classmate. His chest tightened a little at the sight, a pang of loneliness settling in. He hadn't realized how much he missed your presence and attention until it was gone. He tried to focus on his things, but his gaze kept shifting towards you, watching the way you laughed and talked with the other student.
Y/n noticed Kenma looking over and walked up to him "Hey good morning"
Kenma was snapped out of his thoughts at your greeting, his eyes widening slightly as you approached him. He sat up a little straighter in his seat, trying to act casual. "Morning," he replied with a nod. "Uh, how are you..?"
"I'm good thank you, how are you after yesterday? you seemed to have a lot on your mind" Y/n replied.
Kenma shifted in his seat, a little uncomfortable at the question. He didn't want to admit that he missed your attention and that he found it irritating when you were talking to everyone else but him. "I'm fine," he said, his voice a bit gruff. "As I said, just had some things on my mind. Don't worry about it."
"Well I hope you sort everything" Y/n said before sitting back down as class started.
Kenma watched silently as you sat back down, a mix of emotions stirring inside him. He had to fight the urge to call you back, to tell you that he wanted to talk more, but the words got stuck in his throat.
Throughout the rest of the class, his gaze kept drifting towards you unconsciously, watching every little movement you made. Kenma didn't understand what was wrong with him. Why was it so hard to let you go...?
Y/n thought of all the times she had asked you out during class and decided to do it one last time before giving up on these feelings, "Hey kenma, so before I move on from these feelings, I had to ask one last time for old-time sake. will you go out with me?"
Kenma's heart skipped a beat at your question. He hadn't been expecting you to ask him out one more time, especially not in class. He looked at you, his golden eyes wide and unsure. A part of him wanted to say yes, to give in and go out with you. But another part, a stronger, more rational part, knew better. He swallowed, his voice soft and hesitant.
"I... I can't." he stammered.
Y/n's eyes welled with tears "That's okay, I get it. I just felt the need to do it one more time before giving up on you" She knew what was coming so why was she so upset?
As tears filled your eyes, Kenma's heart shattered. He hated seeing you like this, the pain in your eyes being a direct result of him. He wanted to comfort you, to tell you that everything would be alright, but the words wouldn't come out.
His fists clenched as he bit his lip, his eyes downcast as he spoke quietly. "I'm... I'm sorry. I am. I just... can't. It's for the best, right?"
"yep... for the best" Y/n whispered before running off.
As you ran off, leaving the classroom in tears, Kenma felt a pang of regret pierce his chest. He wanted to run after you, to stop you, but he knew deep down that it would do more harm than good.
He sat back in his seat, a bitter taste in his mouth as he ran his hands through his hair. This was wrong, he thought. Everything was wrong. And he couldn't do a thing about it.
