Chapter Three: Queen Kitana

One day later. In the bedchamber room of Edenia's palace, Sindel's maidens adorn Kitana in royal robes, getting her ready for her coronation. As they comb her hair and brush her face, Jade walks in, proud of her friend.

"Never thought I'd see the day... Empress Kitana. It suits you." Jade playfully quips.

"I'm still not used to the title... I can't believe it myself." Kitana smiles nervously.

"Well, there is no one better suited for the title, you will be a great queen." Jade says to her, attempting to reassure Kitana's spirit.

"That means a lot that you believe in me Jade... But, don't feel worthy of being a leader... I want to be, but I'm simply not." She says with a slight frown.

"That's exactly what a leader would say... No one said it would be easy. But, you have us; me, Li Mei, Sindel... We will support you no matter what." Jade promises her, embracing her with a hug.

"She's right, you know. You have us to lean on... Every good leader has them. You are a good person Kitana, with a kind heart. But heavy is the head that wears the crown." Sindel says, appearing near the balcony.

"Mother... I promise to do my best to lead." Kitana vows.

"Your best is enough. It takes a village to govern a realm. Now come, it's time to start." Sindel and Kitana head to the throne room, where the Royal Tribes all pledge their alligance to Kitana. One by one, they swear fealty to the new Queen, vowing to always serve and protect Edenia, and never take up arms against the Queen or her vassals.

"The ceremony is complete, long may you reign; Queen Kitana." Sindel says, bowing in respect to her daughter as she sits on the throne. Later on that day, Sindel and Kitana take a walk around the marketplace, taking in the sights and people.

"I'm surprised that you don't want to travel with your royal guard, it is custom to do so." Sindel reminds her.

"Yes. But, I don't want to startle the people, I am one of them. I want them to see themselves in me, in our guard..." Sindel smiles as she hears her daughter speak.

"What?" Kitana asks.

"Nothing, it's just that... You're speaking like a true Queen already. I couldn't be more proud." She says, chuckling in admiration.

"You know, when I was first Queen, I thought the same way. I still do. However, just bring one or two guards with you. It doesn't hurt to be cautious." Sindel says with concern and love.

"Deal. But only two... You know how much I hate being shadowed." Sindel laughs, hearing Kitana's words.

"And what is Jade? Does she not shadow you?" Sindel playfully asks.

"Well, yes... But it's different. I trust her, she's my dearest friend." Kitana says.

"And what of Mileena? I know how much you want to help her... I want to help her as well, she is also my daughter." Sindel says to her.

"I don't care how long it takes, I won't rest until I cure her of this Tarkatan curse that Shang Tsung put on her. If only he hadn't escaped..." Sindel rests a hand on her shoulder.

"We will find a way, Kitana. For now, you must focus on governing Edenia. It will all be okay." Sindel hugs Kitana before they continue their walk. A few hours later, as Kitana sits on the throne, Li Mei runs towards her.

"My Queen, I have news..." Li Mei pants heavily.

"Li Mei, catch your breath..." Kitana says to her.

"A portal has opened, Liu Kang and Lord Raiden is here to greet you!" Li Mei informs her. Kitana smiles and races to the palace entrance. As she opens the door, Raiden and Liu Kang stand before her.

"My friends! Oh, it's so great to see you!" She embraces them with a warm hug.

"Congratulations are in order, my Queen." Raiden smiles, they bow before her in respect.

"Please, you are both always welcome guests in these halls. We've shed blood and fought side by side, remember?" Kitana says to them both.

"Of course, Empress. It is... Good to see you." Liu Kang says, Kitana smiles at him.

"So... I guess this isn't a social visit?" Kitana wonders.

"I wish it were, but we have grave news..." Raiden solemnly says.

"Rain has invaded the Temple of Elements in Earthrealm. He has stolen a ancient artifact that has unspeakable power. An amulet that holds the power of the Fallen Elder God, Shinnok..." A shiver goes down Kitana's spine.

"I've heard the stories of the great war... It is said that you fought a war against Shinnok, that plunged the Earth into centuries of darkness. In the end, you and the Elder Gods banished him to the Netherrealm for all eternity." Raiden grimaces as Kitana recalls the tale.

"Yes, it was a harrowing time... But necessary in defending the realms. But now, the amulet that holds his power is in the hands of Rain. We must stop him." Raiden says.

"Forgive me, Raiden... But, the Queen has just taken the throne. I don't think she should jump head first into danger." Li Mei cautions them.

"It's fine, Li Mei. I'll go. I'll bring you and Jade with me. I trust you both." Kitana says.

"We will be waiting by the portal as you get ready." As Raiden says those words, Kitana takes off her robes, revealing that she's already dressed in her blue Kombat garb.

"I always stay ready." She smirks as she pulls up her mask.

"Always thinking two steps ahead, huh?" Liu Kang smiles as he looks at Kitana.

"A Queen must always be ready for anything... Even in a time of peace." Kitana winks at Liu Kang as they all head towards the portal. Meanwhile, Sindel visits Mileena in her cell, heart sinks as she watches Mileena fights off the curse.

"Ah... Mother. I didn't see you there..." Mileena winces in pain as she speaks.

"Mileena... My dear daughter... It pains me to see you like this..." Sindel laments.

"I heard Kitana is now Queen... I knew she could do it." Mileena smiles, despite the pain she's suffering through.

"There is a threat coming to Edenia, your sister is investigating the matter in Earthrealm." Mileena is alarmed.

"Why? What's the danger?" She asks.

"Rain has found Shinnok's amulet, I fear the worst if he comes here..." Sindel says. Mileena rises to her feet, feeling a weight in her stomach.

"Mother... There is something you should tell me. Something, you already know about..." Mileena looks at Sindel with determined eyes, unsettling her. What is the thing that Sindel knows about? Could it possibly be a secret that threatens Edenia?
