Chapter 23: A Fresh Start
After reading Anthony's note, I felt a surge of determination. I decided to text him, saying that I would like to meet for coffee and give him a chance to talk. It felt like the right decision, a way to clear the air and see if there could be something more between us.
When the day arrived, I found myself at a local coffee shop, arriving a little early to gather my thoughts. I chose a table near the back, avoiding the booths that looked too small and uncomfortable. I didn't want to make a scene if I couldn't fit.
Moments later, I saw Anthony walk through the door. He was strikingly handsome, with dark hair that slightly obscured his dark eyes. He wore a black tank top with an unbuttoned black button-up shirt over it, and fitted jeans that showcased his defined thighs. My heart skipped a beat.
He smiled at me, a little nervously, which was so unlike him. Taking a seat across from me, he said, "Thank you for talking to me. How are you?"
I smiled softly, feeling a warmth in his presence. "I'm okay. I got a new wardrobe, and I feel like that has helped."
"You look great," he replied, and I felt a blush creeping up my cheeks.
But I could sense the tension in the air, and I decided I couldn't possibly stand the small talk any longer. "So, why didn't I see you at all the day after... you know?"
He took a deep breath, and I could see the weight of the situation on his shoulders. "I ended up not going into school. When I got home, I found out my little brother was really sick, and my mom couldn't miss work, so I stayed home to take care of him. I didn't text you because I wasn't thinking, and I regret that now."
His voice was sincere, and I could tell he was being honest. "I had no intention of sleeping with you and ghosting you," he continued. "I would love to take you on a proper date. I'd love to take you on several planned dates."
As he spoke, I noticed how his eyebrows knitted together, his eyes almost pleading with me. The sincerity in his expression took my breath away.
Then he added, "The eating thing is fun, and it creates a fun sexual dynamic, but if you don't like it, it's totally okay. It never has to happen again."
I thought about what he said, feeling a mix of emotions wash over me. I appreciated his openness, but I also felt the weight of my own insecurities. I wanted to take things slow.
"Okay," I said finally, meeting his gaze. "You can take me out on a date, and we'll see from there."
Relief washed over his face, and he relaxed a bit, a smile breaking through the tension. "I'd like that a lot."
He offered to buy me a coffee, and we settled into a comfortable rhythm, chatting and laughing as the conversation flowed. It felt good, almost like we were starting fresh.
As we sat there, I couldn't help but feel hopeful.
