Yuki Kuran felt the pull of the portal ease as she was thrown out of the temporal vortex, her body landing roughly on cold stone. She took a moment to catch her breath, her heightened senses struggling to adjust to the sudden calm that surrounded her. When she opened her eyes, she was met with a sight that made her heart stop.
"No...it can't be..." Yuki whispered to herself, looking disbelievingly at something before her.
Something so familiar to her even after thousands of years.
Cross Academy.
Panic surged through her.
"This is not the place I'm supposed to land!"
The time machine was supposed to take her to a moment before the plague that wiped out her kind, not back to this place that held so many memories...
The vampire sighs, "I guess I have no choice." There was no time to dwell on what went wrong. If she was in the past, she had to be careful. One wrong move and she could alter the timeline in ways that might prevent her from ever returning to her present.
She stood up slowly, brushing the dirt off her worn combat suit. The campus was eerily quiet, the only sound being the distant chatter of students who were likely heading to their classes. Yuki's thoughts whirled as she assessed her situation. She needed to avoid being seen. Not just because she was out of place, but because there was a chance someone here would recognize her, and that would raise far too many questions she couldn't afford to answer.
Carefully, Yuki slipped into the shadows, her movements fluid and silent. The memories of her time at Cross Academy flooded her senses, making it difficult to focus. She had to find a place to hide until she could figure out her next move. Somewhere no one would look for her.
She crept along the outer wall of the academy, keeping to the shadows cast by the tall buildings. As she rounded a corner, she caught sight of a group of Day Class students walking nearby, their laughter echoing in the crisp morning air. Yuki instinctively pressed herself against the wall, holding her breath until they passed by. Her heart pounded in her chest, the familiar sense of danger sharpening her focus.
Once the students were out of sight, Yuki continued her silent trek across the academy grounds. She needed to find a place where she could think without fear of being discovered. The old storage shed near the forest edge came to mind. It was far enough from the main buildings that students rarely ventured there, and it would provide her with the solitude she needed.
Moving quickly, Yuki made her way to the shed, her senses on high alert. She could hear the distant footsteps of other students, but none were close enough to detect her. As she approached the shed, she felt a strange sense of nostalgia. This was where she and Zero had often met in secret, where they had shared their most vulnerable moments. But this wasn't the time for such thoughts.
She slipped inside the shed, closing the door softly behind her. The space was filled with old, dusty equipment that hadn't been used in years. It was dark and musty, but it was safe. Yuki let out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding and leaned against the wall, finally allowing herself a moment to think.
She needed to figure out when she was. The time machine had clearly malfunctioned, but if she could pinpoint the exact moment she had landed in, she might be able to make the most of the situation. Yuki reached for the small device attached to her wrist—a temporal scanner she had developed with the alien tech. It could give her a rough estimate of the date based on environmental readings.
The scanner hummed quietly as it processed the information. After a few moments, the screen flickered to life, displaying a date that made Yuki's heart skip a beat.
Yuki's breath caught in her throat as she stared at the date displayed on the scanner.
November 4th, 20XX.
She had landed during her own academy days. Her student days. A time when she was still discovering who she was—a time when her life was tangled in the secrets of her lineage, her relationships, and the looming threat of the pureblood vampires.
Panic tightened its grip on her heart. This wasn't just any moment in her past. She was here, at Cross Academy, when she had been a student. That meant she existed in this timeline. She could run into her much younger self at any moment. The consequences of such an encounter could be disastrous. She could alter the timeline in ways that could unravel everything she was trying to protect.
Yuki forced herself to calm down, taking slow, deep breaths. Her mission remained unchanged: she had to find a way to get to the correct time, but now she had to do it while avoiding herself, Zero, Kaname, and everyone else who could recognize her. She couldn't let anyone know she was here. The risks were too great.
She pushed herself off the wall and began to pace the small shed, her mind racing. She had to think of a plan. She needs to find resources to build a new Time Machine, and may need someone's help in procuring it. But who?
A memory surfaced, one that brought both pain and hope. The Headmaster—Kaien Cross. He was wise and resourceful, and he had always known more about the world than he let on. Perhaps he could help her. But approaching him without being detected by anyone else was a challenge. Not to mention the fact that Kaien might not recognize her, given how different she looked now, compared to her younger self.
She rubbed her temples, trying to dispel the headache forming from the stress. She couldn't afford to lose her composure. She needed to keep moving, keep hidden, and find a way to reach Kaien without alerting anyone else.
Suddenly, the sound of approaching footsteps outside the shed made her freeze. Her heart pounded in her chest as she strained her ears, trying to determine who it was. The footsteps were light, hesitant—probably a student. But which one?
The door creaked open, and Yuki held her breath, pressing herself against the darkest corner of the shed. A figure stepped inside, cautiously looking around. Yuki squinted, trying to make out who it was. As the figure stepped into a beam of light filtering through the dusty window, Yuki's heart nearly stopped.
It was Zero Kiryu.
Her first friend. Her protector.
Her lover.
His silver hair glinted in the light, and his violet eyes scanned the room with a look of suspicion. He was still the young, tormented boy she remembered, the one burdened with a destiny he never wanted. And she couldn't let him see her—not like this, not now.
Zero took a step further into the shed, his eyes narrowing as he noticed the disturbed dust on the floor. He was too sharp, too cautious. He knew something was off. Yuki's heart pounded in her chest. She couldn't let him find her. If he did, he would demand answers—answers she couldn't give him.
In a flash, Yuki moved silently, slipping around the edge of the shed and out the door before Zero could turn around. She barely breathed as she darted around the side of the building, keeping low to avoid being seen. She could hear Zero inside, moving closer to where she had been hiding just moments before. She had to get away—quickly.
As she slipped through the shadows, Yuki made a decision. She couldn't recklessly approach Kaien directly—not now. She time to figure out her next move. For now, she would keep to the shadows, avoiding everyone she once knew, and try to find a way to get back.
She could only hope that by staying out of sight and out of mind, she wouldn't disrupt the delicate balance of the timeline she had found herself in. But as she moved deeper into the forest surrounding the academy, one thought nagged at her: how long could she really avoid them without altering the past?
