Rachel despised the woman as soon as she sat down. There was something about her that infuriated the girl. Maybe it was her plastic smile, or her messy hair, or her eyes shining with fake sympathy. Or maybe it was her general hatred for therapists.
She would rather be anywhere in the world than in this chair but her mother was quite insistent on her sessions. She had reluctantly agreed and loudly complained the whole drive over in hopes of changing her mother's mind but in vain.
The therapist leaned forward on the desk, her hands fidgeting with her keychain. "So, Rachel is it?" She began to speak, breaking the silence that seemed to stretch out between them. "I am Doctor Cooper. You may call me Helen if you wish."
No, thank you.
At her lack of response, doctor Cooper began speaking again, twirling her keychain between her fingers.
"So Rachel, what brings you here today?"
Rachel kept her eyes trained straight ahead choosing to focus on anything else. Like the keychain, which Doctor Cooper was still spinning. She noticed it lit up with different colours while in motion. Like a kid's toy, she thought rolling her eyes.
Helen sighed. "You know this is supposed to be an interactive session, right?"
Rachel tore her eyes away from the keychain (with difficulty, she was surprised to notice). "I honestly have nothing to say to you. The only reason I'm here is because my mom asked me to. I am not looking to vent to some random stranger about my problems.
The keychain was still spinning, the lights flashing, moving as if in a circle. The way the colours followed each other was quite mesmerizing. Red, yellow, blue, green all blending together and seperating, a continuous cycle.
She only realised she had been staring for a long time when she heard Doctor Cooper clear her throat and look at her in expectation.
She lightly shook her head, suddenly feeling dazed. "What?"
Helen smiled. "Is my keychain bothering you Rachel?"
"Not at all." How could it, when it looked so very pretty. She could look at it forever and still be amazed at how the colours flowed.
Around.
And around.
And around.
She shook her head again. What was happening to her?
"Actually yes, it is bothering me. Could you stop that please?"
Helen smiled again which started to unravel the pleasant feeling she had been feeling and replaced it with irritation. "And what about my keychain is bothering you Rachel?"
It took her a long time to process her question and reply, her eyes unable to tear away from the keychain.
"Just .... it does, okay? So stop."
But her words were half hearted, as she knew she didn't mean it.
"Is it the fact that you cannot seem to stop looking at it?"
Rachel nodded before she even processed the question.
"Is it the fact that you find yourself drawn towards the lights. The lights that are going around. And around. And around."
With each word Rachel could feel the daze in her mind grow stronger.
"Or is it the fact," Helen leaned closer, her voice dropping to a low soothing hum. "That you find yourself doing anything for the pretty lights?"
"Yes." The word muttered from her mouth as she stared at the lights, eyes half-lidded and lips apart.
She blinked suddenly. "Wha- what are- are you- do-ing- t-to- m-me-"
