The days following Derrick's tragic loss were a blur for Seraphina. She had thrown herself into her studies, using school as a distraction from the pain that gnawed at her heart. But even as she tried to focus on her classes, her thoughts often drifted back to her father and the terrible void his absence had left in her life.

One chilly afternoon, as Seraphina sat in the college library, her eyes scanning the pages of a textbook without really absorbing the words, a familiar voice broke through her reverie.

"Hey, Seraphina."

She looked up to see Todd standing beside her, a warm smile on his face. His blue eyes twinkled with that same playful energy she had come to associate with him, and despite the heaviness in her heart, she couldn't help but smile back.

"Hey, Todd," she replied, closing her book. "What's up?"

Todd slid into the seat across from her, his gaze softening as he studied her. "I've been thinking about you. You've seemed a little... distant lately. Is everything okay?"

Seraphina hesitated, unsure of how much to share. She had kept her father's death private, not wanting to burden others with her grief. But Todd's concern felt genuine, and something about the way he looked at her made her want to open up.

"I've just been dealing with a lot," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "My father... he passed away recently."

Todd's expression shifted to one of shock and sympathy. "Oh, Seraphina, I'm so sorry. I had no idea. If I'd known, I wouldn't have..."

She shook her head quickly. "It's okay. I didn't really tell anyone. I didn't want people to treat me differently, you know?"

Todd reached across the table and gently took her hand, his touch warm and comforting. "I get it. But you don't have to go through this alone. I'm here for you, Seraphina. If you ever need to talk... or just not talk... I'm here."

His kindness touched her more than she could express, and for the first time in days, she felt a flicker of something other than sorrow—gratitude. "Thank you, Todd. That means a lot."

They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of their conversation lingering between them. Then, with a sudden burst of energy, Todd smiled again, trying to lighten the mood.

"Hey, how about this? What do you say we get out of here for a bit? There's this great little café not too far from campus. It's got the best hot chocolate in town. I thought... maybe we could go there together? You know, as a date?"

Seraphina blinked, surprised by the sudden shift in conversation. A date? The idea of dating hadn't even crossed her mind in recent weeks. But as she looked into Todd's hopeful eyes, she felt a warmth spread through her chest, something she hadn't felt in what seemed like forever.

"A date?" she repeated, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Are you sure you want to go on a date with me, Todd? I'm not exactly great company right now."

Todd squeezed her hand, his smile unwavering. "I'm sure, Seraphina. You're amazing company, no matter what. Besides, we could both use a break, don't you think? We can talk, laugh, or just sit there and enjoy the hot chocolate. Whatever you want."

She considered his offer for a moment. The idea of escaping the heaviness of her grief, even for just a little while, was tempting. And Todd... Todd had been a bright spot in her life since they met. Maybe spending time with him was exactly what she needed.

"Okay," she agreed, her smile growing. "A date it is. Lead the way."

Todd's face lit up with excitement. "Awesome! You won't regret it, I promise."

They gathered their things and left the library, the cool autumn air nipping at their cheeks as they walked side by side through the campus. For the first time in days, Seraphina felt a sense of anticipation rather than dread, a small but significant shift in her outlook.

As they arrived at the cozy café, the warmth of the interior and the rich aroma of chocolate and coffee greeted them. Todd held the door open for her, a playful grin on his face.

"After you, my lady," he said with a mock bow.

Seraphina laughed, a genuine sound that felt strange yet wonderful. "Why, thank you, kind sir."

They found a quiet corner booth and ordered their drinks, the conversation flowing easily between them. Todd's lighthearted jokes and stories were a welcome distraction from the darkness that had been clouding Seraphina's mind. For a little while, she allowed herself to forget about her loss and simply enjoy the moment.

As they sipped their hot chocolate, Todd leaned in closer, his expression turning serious. "I know I'm not your dad, Seraphina, but I want you to know that I care about you. I don't want to replace him or anything, but... I want to be there for you, in whatever way you need."

His words struck a chord deep within her, and Seraphina felt a swell of emotion rise in her chest. She reached out and took his hand again, squeezing it gently.

"Thank you, Todd. That means more to me than you know."

For the rest of the afternoon, they stayed at the café, talking, laughing, and sharing stories. Todd didn't press her to talk about her father, but he also didn't shy away from the topic when she brought it up. It was a delicate balance, one that made Seraphina feel both comforted and understood.

As the sun began to set and they finally left the café, Seraphina realized that she was genuinely looking forward to whatever came next. Todd had managed to pull her out of her grief, if only for a little while, and in doing so, had given her a glimpse of hope—a reminder that even in the darkest times, there could still be moments of light and connection.

When they reached her house, Todd walked her to the door, his usual playful smile back on his face. "So, how did I do? Was it the best date you've ever been on, or what?"

Seraphina chuckled, feeling a warmth in her heart that she hadn't felt in a long time. "It was definitely up there, Todd. Thank you for today. I really needed it."

Todd grinned, clearly pleased with himself. "Anytime, Seraphina. Anytime."

As she watched him walk away, Seraphina felt a sense of peace settle over her. The pain of her father's loss was still there, but it no longer felt all-consuming. With Todd's help, she had found a way to start moving forward, and that was something she hadn't thought possible just a few days ago.

As she entered her home, Seraphina couldn't help but smile. This new chapter in her life was just beginning, and for the first time in what felt like forever, she was excited to see where it would lead.
