DING DONG ~

The noise of the doorbell echoing through your apartment only made you bury your head further into your pillow and plushie. Unless it was the delivery of that new quilt you ordered, you wished whoever was at the door knocked instead. To be left alone in your sleepy bliss for a little while longer, is that too much to ask? Slowly pulling your head out of the softness of your pillow, you glanced at your alarm clock. You suppose referring to it simply as "clock" would be more fitting, considering you never set an alarm. You blink yourself back to reality and focus your eyes on the painfully bright red numerals. 4:35 pm, your new personal best for sleeping in.

DING DONG ~

And the doorbell rang again...

Maybe if you ignore them long enough they'll leave you alone? If it's someone you know, they would have left after the first ring, knowing you were either asleep or ignoring them. You prayed to the gods or whatever gave you your Splatfests that whoever was at the door would leave you alone.

A minute or two passed with no interruptions, and you lay in blissful silence, comfortably warm in your soft bed. You lost feeling in your legs, and the sensation was coming up to your arms. You were about to drift off before a sudden crash from outside made you jump. The sleep clouding your head quickly flew away like a startled bird.

'Did someone crash onto the balcony...?'

The little "knock-knock" on the glass sliding door confirmed your question. You have a feeling about who it is. Despite being grumpy about the whole predicament, you couldn't just leave him stranded on your balcony in the spring heat. It'd hurt your heart to treat him that way.

With a sigh, you roll out of bed and onto the floor with a soft "thump", thankful for having such a soft carpet. Despite not cushioning your fall, it soothed you with its luxurious texture. You rubbed the palms of your hands over the carpet in contentment before firmly placing them on top of it to push yourself up. Standing now, you moved to pull back the blinds covering your glass sliding doors. Whoever was standing there you were already planning on strangling affectionately.

Languidly, you pulled the curtains aside and made eye contact with the perpetrator of your sleep. Harsh purple eyes stared right back into yours, causing you to jump slightly.

"...Skull." You breathe out, relieved.

You unlocked the balcony door and slid it open, staring at your high-ranking friend with a dumbfounded look. Skull nodded with a "thanks" and moved to step inside before you quickly placed your hand on the doorframe, your arm blocking his way.

"Wa-Wait..." You huff, "What's up...?"

The purple inkling didn't take long to respond, his bandana slightly muffling his words. "A new sweets shop opened nearby today, specializing in candies from Calamari County."

"Since you used to live there, I thought you might want to go with me." He hums, looking off to the side while moving his hands.

How oddly thoughtful for a no-thoughts-head-empty kind of guy.

You sighed in relief, glad to know it wasn't anything life-threatening. Despite being disappointed about getting up, you moved out of Skull's way with a gentle smile.

"Watch your shoes, by the way... The carpet is particularly soft today, don't wanna ruin it."

Skull nodded as you walked to the living room, following closely behind after taking off his shoes. You got to work pulling out your favorite cereals and two bowls, turning on the TV to a random cartoon channel afterward. Patting your friend on the back, you told him to make himself comfortable while you got dressed. As soon as your hand left his back, Skull made a beeline to the cereal. You let out a breathy chuckle and headed back to your room.

You fixed your tentacles with a yawn and changed into something more suitable for going out. Admiring yourself in the floor-length mirror, you did a little twirl to humor yourself.

'Looking fly and fresh if I do say so m...' Your thoughts trailed off, the corner of your mirror catching your eye.

There sat a hair clip of an (anatomically incorrect) skeleton squid, with little lollipops surrounding it. It came with a special package of Halloween candy Skull bought, and since he didn't wear accessories like this, he gave it to you. You ended up taping it to your mirror as a decoration. You smiled at the memory, deciding today was the day you'd finally put the clip to use. Taking the clip off of the mirror, you unclasped it, slid the lower piece into your tentacle, and secured it with a snap. The glossy finish made it shimmer in the light and you smiled.

Grabbing a pair of shoes, you shuffled out of your bedroom. Upon entering the living room, you saw Skull sitting at the coffee table with an empty bowl, his legs folded on the ground and his eyes glued to the screen. You placed your shoes near the front door before making your way to the dining room, letting out another yawn that caught your companion's attention.

"...Your cereal's in the bowl already."

You looked at the bowl left on the dining table, lo and behold, it was filled to the brim with your favorite cereal with a spoon dug into the sugary mound. You chirped out a soft "thanks" and poured milk into the bowl before placing the jug back into the fridge. Carefully cupping your hands around the ceramic bowl, you moved to sit next to the indigo-colored inkling. The TV was turned into a channel that specialized in reruns and older cartoons. You spent the rest of your breakfast enjoying nonsensical cartoon violence with Skull in silence, letting out a cough every once in a while as you got used to being awake. Eventually, your spoon clattered against your empty bowl, and you and Skull both stood up. The purple inkling wordlessly turned off the TV and moved to your front door as you shuffled to the kitchen and placed your bowl in the sink.

"...Ready To go?" Skull softly asked, watching as you slipped on your shoes.

"Mhm..." You hummed, standing straight and smiling at him.

Entwining your hands together, the two of you stepped out of your apartment and into the cool spring air.
