Emily sat at the kitchen table, her laptop open in front of her, as she meticulously filled out the paperwork. Her fingers moved quickly over the keys, her mind laser-focused on the task at hand. The application was almost complete, and once it was submitted, there would be no turning back.Jake walked into the room, his expression skeptical as he noticed her intense concentration. "What are you up to, Em?" he asked, leaning against the counter with his arms crossed.
Emily didn't look up from the screen as she replied, "Just finishing up some paperwork."
Jake's brow furrowed. "Paperwork for what?"
Emily paused, taking a deep breath before meeting his gaze. "For Willow Creek High. I'm applying as a new student—under a different name, of course."
Jake's eyes widened in surprise. "Wait, you’re what? How did you even manage to do that? The paperwork, the identity change—everything?"
Emily smirked slightly, a hint of mischief in her eyes. "I have my ways, Jake. Let's just say I know how to work the system when I need to."
Jake shook his head, a mixture of disbelief and admiration in his expression. "You're something else, you know that?"
"Maybe," Emily replied, her tone serious now. "But this is for Ashley. Whatever it takes to find out what happened to her, it's worth it."
Jake sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I get it, Em. I do. But this is dangerous—way more dangerous than we initially thought."
"I know," Emily said, her voice steady. "But it's the only way. No one else is doing anything, and the longer we wait, the colder the trail gets. I have to do this."
Jake stared at her for a moment, his protective instincts warring with his understanding of her determination. Finally, he nodded. "Alright. But you're not doing this alone. I'll be watching over you every step of the way."
Emily gave him a grateful smile. "I wouldn’t have it any other way."
With that, she clicked the final button on her laptop, officially submitting the application. As the confirmation message appeared on the screen, Emily felt a surge of resolve. She was now Emma Clarke, a new student at Willow Creek High, and she was one step closer to finding the truth about her sister.
