Author's POV

The executive club of the family, Il Covone, dimly lit, is a place of luxury and murmurs, clinking glasses: The Private VIP section was where waitresses went to take drink after drink for the Capos who nursed their drinks, exchanging tension-filled glances. It's been two days now since the news of the new future Don in the company-however, it is the shock of the announcement by Leonardo Dario Albano that has brought unease among the few of them around these men. Those who plotted so carefully to manoeuvre Luca from the throne were suddenly placed in a position whereby their own pride was threatened by the elevation of the rightful heir.".

The Five came under the loose, still powerful control of Capo Pietro Santoro, each of the five clubs having their specific demands. Il Covone, for example, had been a perfect place for these shadowy figures, the club with its extravagant interior, with concealed corners, attracting all whispered conspiracies. Today Pietro was ensuring that this club was the safest place to speak open, yet tonight he could feel, even him, the unease hanging in the air.

Across town, Leonardo stood in his study, looking out to the grounds in the distance, where rich scents of old leather and smoke from cigars drifted through the air. He had been agitated since the day the news came out, acutely aware that not everyone would celebrate the ascension. His mind had been eating at him with a sense of suspicion and curiosity. The soldiers at his family's place were good to him, but silence doesn't equal acceptance and silence doesn't equal loyalty either. A little earlier in the evening Elio told him about the Capos-an unsanctioned meeting at Il Covone.

What would be the response if I came without notice? Leo thought, this thought laced with exciting fears and darkness. He paced in the room while the soft light of the desk lamp cast his shadow large against the wall. More he needed to know: more of what's happening, what's cooking up beneath his nose, and who is on his side.

Just as he would raise his hand for the coat, and ambush the capos, his phone began vibrating on the table, its screen lightening up with Luca's name to update on the activity going around the city. Leo picked the call, his voice steady but with an underlying sharpness.

Leo: Luca, where are you?

His voice is steady, but there's a slight pause before he speaks.

Luca: I'm just out, checking on some things for the business. What's up, Leo?
