The night was quiet and calm. For anyone who didn't know better, it was as though everything was fine. Everything was far from fine.Evan's ears felt numb from the screeching and roaring of their undead attackers. At this point, it was just background noise is his daily lifestyle.
"You doing okay?" Barty asked quietly from across the room. They were in a dimly lit room in the Rosier Manor which made it quite hard to see him so Evan had almost forgotten he was over there.
"Yeah... Yeah. I'm fine." He assured before turning to look back outside through the gaps in the boarded up windows. He sat with his knees tucked up to to chest, his head rested on top of them.
Barty stood up and walked towards him. As he grew closer, Evan could properly see what these past few months had done to him. Cuts and bruises covered his pale skin. His eye bags had grown darker and bigger. He looked visibly drained. "You don't have to lie to me about this, Ev. I'm not doing the best either." He confessed, sitting down in front of him.
Evan nodded at him and glanced outside again. Figures clawed at the metal fence surrounding the house, trying to reach them. Those of them who were too far back to reach the fence pulled at eachother, tugging themselves down to the floor. It made Evan sick to think about how all those creatures were once like them. They once had families and friends, partners, even children.
"It's just... how long are we going to have to live like this?" He asked, glancing back at Barty. "I mean, it's already been what? Four months? Five? Sooner or later we're going to run out of supplies." He stated. He didn't mean to be such a pessimist about all this but he was struggling to find any good about their situation.
Barty took hold of his hands. "Don't say that, Evan. I will do everything I can to make sure we survive, okay? I promise." He assured, his voice hushed but determinded.
Evan smiled weakly and nodded. "I believe you." He whispered, squeezing Barty's hands.
"Good." Barty answered, reciprocating Evan's smile before leaning forward and giving him a quick kiss. "Go get some sleep. I'll keep first watch."
Evan grabbed the nailed baseball bat that leaned against the wall beside him. "Alright then. Call if you need me." He said before walking over to the low bed, placing down the bat within quick reach.
"Hey, Ev?" Barty whisper-shouted over at him. "What would you do if I got bitten?" He asked randomly.
Evan was slightly taken aback by this, turning around fully to face him. "What? Why-"
Barty shrugged him off. "Yeah, sorry. Stupid question. Forget I said anything." He mumbled, looking back out the window.
Evan lay down on the bed. "If you got bitten? If you got bitten I would make it my top priority to find a cure. And if I couldn't, then I'd let you infect me too." He explained calmly, staring up at the ceiling.
Barty stared over at him, absolutely speechless. "Would you really?" He asked, resting the rifle he was holding on his lap.
Evan nodded. "Yeah, of course." He pulled a pocket knife from his jeans and started twirling it in between his fingers absentmindedly. "What would you do?"
Barty looked down at his gun. "I don't know..." He muttered, leaning back against the wall behind him. "I guess the same things you said."
Evan chuckled. Barty smiled softly over at him before speaking. "Now, go the fuck to sleep. You need rest."
Evan rolled his eyes, putting the knife aside. "Yeah, yeah." He teased, turning over to lay on his side.
Barty turned back to the window, peeking out at all the undead outside. He hoped and prayed that this would be over soon.
