^^^Devine’s POV^^^
I decided to sit on the couch and wait for my chat with Lizzy’s dad. I could only imagine what I was in for. I mean if I were in his place I sure wouldn’t let the guy in my place off easily. I heard the steps creaking and then the door opened. Mr. Montgomery was leaning heavily on the door. I stood up quickly and moved to his side. He gladly leaned on me as I guided him over to a chair that looked like it could be his favorite.
“Thank you Devine.”
“It’s no problem. Can I get you anything? A glass of water or something?”
“No thank you I don’t need anything.” He was still a little winded. He laid his head back against the chair. “Ah now this is comfort.” After a moment he opened his eyes and looked directly into mine. “So tell me Devine do you love my Elizabeth?”
“Yes sir I do love her.”
“How did you two meet?”
“She came with her mom to one of our concerts a couple years back. Her mom was doing some kind of project with Kraze’s wife so we were all hanging out after the show.” I saw his look of confusion. “Kraze is our drummer. We all have stage names we use.”
“So you to hit it off right away then?”
“Actually she was a bit shy at first. She spent most of her time that night with Drag and Kraze since she had already met them because of the project her mom was working on. We didn’t really talk a lot till about a month later.” I smiled at the memory. “She’d been talking to me a bit more and then after one of our shows a groupie was trying to keep me all to herself and she rescued me from her.” I chuckled. “That girl was not happy but she backed off. We’ve been together pretty much since that night even though we didn’t officially start dating for another two months.”
“And now you’re engaged.”
“Yes for about a year now.”
“And how long exactly did you two date before you proposed?”
“One year and eight months. I took her out to the restaurant where we went on our first date. It was really special for her because apparently it’s also the place where you took her mom on your first date.”
“Ah that place was romantic.”
“Yes sir.”
“Is Lizzy pregnant?” I looked at him surprised.
“No sir. She’s still…well it’s her wish to wait until our wedding night and I respect her decision.”
“You’ve been with my daughter almost three years and you haven’t been …active…with her?”
“We haven’t done anything that would get Lizzy pregnant.”
His eyes narrowed at me.
“It’s always Lizzy’s choice in anything we do sir. I would never pressure her or force her to do anything. I respect her and the decisions she makes.”
“I don’t like that you are staying in her room. And don’t try to deny it your bags aren’t out here so they have to be in her room.”
“I can understand sir.”
“Can you now.”
“I have a little sister that I am rather protective of.”
“Where is she now?”
“An all girls boarding school in France.”
His lips formed a smile.
“Well I guess you can sort of understand then.”
“I would never intentionally hurt Lizzy sir. I do love her.”
“So I’m beginning to believe.”
We both turned to the door as we heard angry footfalls coming up the steps. A minute later Lizzy came through the door and the anger was still blazing in her eyes. She stopped when she saw us. Her eyes went from anger to concern when she saw how tired her dad looked.
“Are you ok Dad?”
“Yeah Lizzy I’m fine just a little tired. You know Devine I think I will take a glass of water now.”
“Yes sir.” I got up and went to the kitchen. Lizzy kneeled beside her dad.
“Dad are you sure?”
“Yes Bethie, I’m fine. Devine’s been a big help this evening.” I handed him the glass of water.
“You haven’t called me Bethie since before…”
“I know. You asked me to stop when you turned twelve but no matter how old you get you will always be my little Bethie.”
I could see the tears in her eyes. I laid my hand on her shoulder and squeezed as John walked through the doorway. He looked at us and I immediately saw concern in his eyes.
“Is everything ok?”
“Yes,” Mr. Montgomery answered, “they’re just being worrisome.”
John gave a fake smile and said, “Ok then I’m going to start dinner. De…” he looked at Lizzy.
“Devine.” She supplied. “I’m going to start my shower.”
“Ok,” we both replied simultaneously. She walked into her room and I could hear her opening drawers. Her dad turned the TV on and flipped to a news channel.
“Devine…can you help me out here for a minute?” He asked.
“Sure,” I said and walked out to the kitchen. “What do you need?” I got the feeling that there was more between him and Lizzy than what was being let on but then again maybe it was just my imagination.
“Well I don’t really need any help I just wanted to make sure that he was really ok.”
“I don’t know I haven’t been around enough to really observe him but he was all out of breath and clammy when he made it back up stairs.” He frowned.
“That’s not good at this stage of his recuperation.”
“Well from what I saw downstairs it looks like you guys have been busy and it could just be all the excitement.”
“True he’s been pushing himself a lot these last few days wanting to be downstairs with us to watch the repairs and handle the counter while we work. There hasn’t been a lot of customers but he wasn’t downstairs a whole lot since the treatment before this.”
“Well I can help now that I’m here. I can run the counter while he supervises the repairs or stays up here to rest.”
“That would be a big help and we could use a third set of hands for some of the repairs.”
“This stuff smells good.”
“Thank you.”
“You boys seem to be getting along just fine and here I hurried my shower.”
We turned to see Lizzy.
“Why wouldn’t we be?” I asked her.
She looked surprised for a moment.
“Well…there was just a lot of tension earlier and John has a tendency to be as overprotective as my father at times.”
“We can still get along. Devine seems like a cool guy.”
“I’m glad you approve.” she said unable to hide the sarcastic edge to her voice.
He raised his eyebrow at her.
“I’ll set the table while you guys finish up.” She grabbed the dishes and began placing them around the table in the dining nook. By the time she finished John was serving and I was helping her dad get settled at the table.
“This is nice having a place full of young people again.”
“Dad you aren’t that old.”
“Old enough for grandchildren soon I reckon.”
“Dad!” Lizzy blushed crimson and John looked a little sour.
“This is good,” I commented to John motioning to the food on my plate.
“Thank you.” Lizzy and her dad echoed comments and it was quiet for a minute.
“Sam,” John started and Mr. Montgomery looked up, “Devine and I were talking while we were cooking and he offered to cover the counter while you supervise our renovations or rest up here.”
“Really?” Lizzy said.
“Yeah,” John replied, “He offered to be our third set of hands as well.”
She turned to me smiling. “Thank you Devine.”
“Sounds good to me boys.”
The rest of the dinner was just quiet chit chat about plans for the store renovations.
^^^John’s POV^^^
After Lizzy cleaned up the dishes she and Devine disappeared into her room.
“John, about your offer…”
“Don’t worry about it Sam. She seems really happy.”
“Yes but a deal is a deal.”
“I only want her to be happy Sam and she seems to love him and he seems to love her.”
Lizzy walked back out of her room. I could hear water running. Her dad looked from her to me.
“Well I think I’m going to go retire to my room.” He got up and waved away both me and Lizzy. “I can do it on my own.” He disappeared into his room leaving us alone.
“Lizzy about earlier downstairs.” Her mood immediately shifted and I could see her stiffen. “I just wanted to apologize for what I said. I had no right I was way out of line.”
“Yes you were but I still shouldn’t have been so…cruel.”
“Friends Lizzy?”
“Friends John.”
I could hear the water turn off. That was my cue. I picked up my jacket.
“Well I’d say it’s time for me to go. I’ll see you tomorrow Lizzy.” I walked to the outside door and remembered to lock it behind me as I made my way down the outside staircase.
^^^Lizzy’s POV^^^
John left and I was as confused again as I was downstairs. He’s right even though I had my reasons for not telling my dad I should have told him especially when he kissed me. But I hadn’t and I still didn’t know why. I could hear Devine moving around in my room now so I made sure that the door had locked behind John and checked to make sure everything in the kitchen was off before I turned out all the lights and went to my room. Devine was awkwardly sitting at my vanity trying to comb out his hair. I chuckled then took the comb from him. “Come here.” I said patting the mattress beside where I had sat down. He stood up tightening the towel around his waist and moved to the bed. I combed his hair out for him taking care with the knots.
“There. All done.” I said. He turned around and his hand covered mine that was holding his comb.
“Lizzy…” I looked at him and he leaned in kissing my lips sweetly. His hand cupped my face and he deepened the kiss. Before I knew it my clothes and his towel and been removed and tossed around the room our make out session becoming very heated.
“Deee-viiiine” his name came out a long sigh. A cross between a plea and word of praise. He understood. The path of kisses he’d been stringing along my collarbone moved south and I bit my lip and my tongue trying to keep quiet as my hands fisted in the sheets.
A little while later I lay in Devine’s arms. I kissed his lips gently. He cuddled me closer and murmured “Je t'aime.”
“Moi aussi, je t'aime.” I replied. Being in his arms felt so right. So did what we had just done. But I couldn’t help but feel guilty when I thought about John and the kiss we had shared on this very bed less than forty-eight hours ago. I knew that Devine would forgive it. Nothing had really happened other than the kiss and we had both just agreed we were nothing more than friends but still I couldn’t bring myself to tell him. Devine’s breath evened out into sleep. I lay in his arms remembering all the good times we’d had over the last couple of years. He’d been there for me so many times when I had needed someone. I cuddled closer and lay my head on his chest. His arms reflexively tightened around me and he murmured my nickname in his sleep. I smiled and let myself drift into my dream world safely tucked away from confusing reality for a while.
