I woke early the next morning and not wanting to wake Devine or my dad I decided to get dressed and do some cleaning up around the store. My dad was a great job at running the store but he could be a total slob when it came to all the paperwork that went with running the office. As I entered the store from the stairway leading upstairs I glanced at the counter. Yep I was right there were already things out of place. I walked over and picked up several contracts that had been delivered recently. I sighed knowing that it was time for us to renew most of our magazine and media subscriptions as well as our utilities. I really didn't know where dad thought we were going to get all of this money. I mean the repairs and renovations we were doing now were only putting us farther in the hole although the recent renovations had started to draw in a bit more business. Maybe if Devine could stay long enough and we could book a few double time slot music lessons we might be able to break even this quarter. I didn't count on it though. Devine said he only had a month and it would probably take us most of that just to get everything in order. We still had John though. He would be a real asset to us if we could get people interested in booking lessons. That required us actually drawing business back which would probably be easier said than done with the new larger music store in the mall just a short drive away. I looked around the messy office depressed. I just couldn't see how this was going to turn around for us and I knew it would destroy my dad to lose this shop after all these years. I stacked the contracts on top of the inbox for me to go through later. I then straightened the stack of bills and sorted them into payable, maybe payable and beg for yet another extension. Looking at those stacks didn't help my depression any, so I quickly checked the store's email and then returned upstairs to see a sleepy Devine emerge from my bedroom.

“There you are I was wondering where you were.”

“I woke up early and didn’t want to disturb you so I did some work downstairs.”

He frowned. “By yourself?”

I laughed. “This isn’t Paris Devine. It’s a lot safer here. Besides the outside doors are still locked the only way to get into the shop downstairs is through the door from up here.”

“I still don’t like the thought of you down their alone. What if someone broke in?”

“Devine.”

“I’m just saying I’d be more comfortable….”

I kissed him to quiet him and after a moment I heard a chuckle. We broke apart and turned around to see my dad standing in the living room.

“I have to say son I agree with you about her early hours downstairs but as you can see she always seems to know just how to quiet a persons objections.”

“Yes sir she certainly does.”

“I think we can stop with the sir stuff. You’re going to be my son-in-law after all. Call me Sam or Dad.”

“Yes sir…I mean Sam.”

“That’s better now what do you say to some breakfast?”

“How about you guys go sit and I will cook?”

“Lizzy you’ve been cooking a lot lately.”

“But you know I love to cook Devine.”

“True. But still I could….”

“You can go get to know my dad better while I make us all some yummy food.”

He sighed and shaking his head he walked over to the table and poured himself a cup of coffee.

“She’s a stubborn one. I used to wonder where she got it from.”

“Hah, well now you know. I can’t say she gets much from me but she did get that and it’s not always a bad thing to have.”
