JUDE'S P.O.V
I've never felt so satisfied.
As the car rolls down Crow's Nest Avenue, I can't help but smile at the thought of our successful operation. The satisfaction of pulling off the plan feels like a high-end accessory I've just added to my collection. We've impressed Mr. Kalonji, and his praise is a nice bonus. I glance around at my teammates, all basking in the afterglow of our little victory. The thrill of a job well done and the anticipation of what's next makes the evening feel like one of those rare moments when everything just clicks.
The quiet hum of the engine is interrupted by the buzz of Xander's phone. Xander answers and puts it on speaker for everyone to hear. Mr. Kalonji's voice crackles through the car's Bluetooth, smooth and approving. "Impressive work," he says, and even though his tone was calm, the compliment hit like a shot of adrenaline. "You handled yourselves well. The mayor's going to realize how serious we are." Looking around the vehicle, I can't shake the worry creeping up in my chest at Vera's absence. Of course, I know she can handle herself, but that doesn't stop the knot forming in my stomach.
She's not very used to seduction or the ways to handle a man if things are taken to an extreme, so some part of me wishes I had her job instead, knowing my expertise.
And by the way Xander hasn't cracked a single smile since we started our journey home means even he must be feeling the weight of it all.
"Just doing what we do best," Lila replies, the pride unmistakable in her voice.
"I don't mean to ruin the mood or anything, but what are we gonna do about Vera?" I voice what everyone's thinking. We had a plan for her to seduce him, but no one expected she'd let him take her home. It's unexpected, and the air grows heavy with unspoken worries.
"Vera is a highly competent alumna; she'll get in and out swiftly. Xander, if it's not too much trouble, could you track the laced jewelry she wore tonight and pick her up? I've already sent her a message about her... rescue, if you will." Mr. Kalonji's instruction hangs in the air as Xander nods, though his mind seems elsewhere. "Is that clear, Xander?" Mr. Kalonji questions, confusion lacing his tone.
"Excuse him Mr. Kalonji, he's still so hung up on Vera's other highly competent skills," Vincent mocks while puckering his lips and pretending to make out with Ravi next to him. My face grimaces as Lila and Tyson let out a synchronized laugh which causes them to glare at one another shortly after. Ravi and Vincent giggle with each other whilst Mr. Kalonji calmly distinguishes the insensitive remark.
