Twenty years had passed since the incident aboard the Curiosity, and the universe had changed in ways few could have imagined. Zara Novak's warning had reached Earth, but the response had been fragmented, chaotic. Some believed, some denied, and in the confusion, humanity had taken its first stumbling steps onto the galactic stage.
Aiden Novak stood at the helm of the Starweaver, a ship that was equal parts exploration vessel and warship. At thirty-two, he cut an imposing figure—tall and broad-shouldered, with his mother's piercing green eyes and a shock of prematurely silver hair. The legacy of the artifact had left its mark on him in more ways than one.
"Captain," his first officer, Lyra Chen, called from her station. "We're picking up unusual energy readings from the Carina Nebula. It matches the signature we've been tracking."
Aiden's hand went to the shard hanging around his neck—a fragment of the original artifact his mother had carried. "Put it on screen," he ordered, his voice carrying the weight of command.
The main viewscreen flickered to life, showing a swirling mass of cosmic gases and newborn stars. But there, at the heart of the nebula, was something that didn't belong—a structure of impossible geometry, its surface rippling like liquid metal.
"Is that what I think it is?" Lyra asked, her voice hushed with awe.
Aiden nodded grimly. "A Precursor station. Just like the one my mother described." He turned to address the bridge crew. "All hands to battle stations. We're going in."
As klaxons blared throughout the ship, Aiden's mind wandered back to his childhood. He had been born in the midst of chaos, as humanity grappled with the knowledge that they were not alone in the universe—and that they were woefully unprepared for what was coming.
Zara had returned from her encounter in the Nexus changed, possessing knowledge and abilities that defied explanation. She had tried to prepare humanity, to unite them against the coming storm. But fear and suspicion had won out. By the time Aiden was ten, his mother had been branded a traitor by some, a messiah by others.
And then, she had disappeared.
The Starweaver shuddered as it entered the nebula, cosmic forces buffeting against its shields. Aiden gripped the arms of his command chair, pushing away the memories. He had a mission to complete.
"Multiple contacts!" the tactical officer, a grizzled veteran named Griggs, shouted. "Reading energy signatures consistent with Void Stalker vessels."
Aiden's jaw clenched. The Void Stalkers—the same entities that had attacked the Curiosity two decades ago. In the years since, they had become a terrifying legend among spacers, appearing from nowhere to abduct entire colonies.
"Evasive maneuvers," Aiden ordered. "Weapons hot. Let's show these interdimensional bastards what humanity can do."
The Starweaver banked hard, narrowly avoiding a barrage of energy weapons that seemed to bend space itself. Aiden felt the familiar surge of power from the artifact shard, his senses expanding beyond the confines of normal space-time.
"Sir," Lyra called out, her voice tight with tension. "We're being hailed. It's... it's coming from the Precursor station."
Aiden hesitated for a split second. This wasn't part of the mission plan. But then again, when had anything in his life gone according to plan?
"Put it through," he said.
The viewscreen flickered, and a face appeared that made Aiden's heart skip a beat. Older, weathered by time and hardship, but unmistakable.
