Shadows are the be-all and end-all for realistic drawings or any drawings at all. Shadows are used to represent an object in three dimensions.
Shadows arise where there is little or no light. The area facing the light is correspondingly bright and almost completely illuminated. Places that face away from the light or where the light is obscured by something else are accordingly dark. The less light comes to a place, the darker the place is. When drawing, a distinction is made between body shadows and cast shadows.
Body shadow: Also called self-shadow, is the shadow that an object creates on its own surface. This shadow makes your drawing look three-dimensional.
Cast shadow: Also called external shadow, is the shadow that an object casts on the ground. Through this shadow you can see where the light is coming from and what angle the light is at.
