The sweltering heat of a summer afternoon bore down on the school as Kiyotaka Ayanokoji and his classmates made their way to the pool for their first swimming lesson. The atmosphere was noticeably lighter than it had been in the classroom. Conversations buzzed with a mix of excitement and nervousness, with students eager to show off their skills—or hide their lack thereof.

Kiyotaka, as usual, remained in the background, observing the interactions around him. He had no particular interest in the lesson, but he knew better than to stand out by refusing to participate. Blending in required participation, after all.

The pool was an impressive facility, its clear blue waters sparkling under the afternoon sun. As the students lined up, their gym instructor, Mr. Hoshinomiya, gave them a rundown of the day's activities. The plan was simple: warm-ups, followed by a few laps to gauge everyone's abilities.

But Kiyotaka had noticed something peculiar as they walked to the pool. Several of his male classmates—particularly Ken Sudou, the class's resident hothead, and the flamboyant Rokusuke Kōenji—were eyeing each other with a mix of rivalry and determination. It was clear that this swimming lesson was going to be more than just a test of skill; it was going to be a competition.

"Hey, Kōenji!" Sudou called out, his voice loud and brimming with confidence. "You think you're gonna outswim me? No way, man. I'll bet 10,000 points that I finish before you."

Kōenji, never one to be outdone in flamboyance, flicked his long blond hair back and laughed, a sound that was both irritating and theatrical. "Oh, Sudou, my dear boy, I wouldn't dream of depriving you of the joy of competition. But if it's a wager you want, let's make it more interesting. How about 20,000 points?"

The group of boys around them started to murmur, their interest piqued by the escalating stakes. Kiyotaka could see where this was going—Sudou and Kōenji were both too proud to back down. But before Sudou could agree to the increased bet, Kiyotaka spoke up, his voice calm and measured.

"Why stop at 20,000 points?" Kiyotaka said, stepping forward, his eyes meeting both Sudou's and Kōenji's. "Let's make it 50,000 points, and let's include everyone. First place takes the full amount."

Sudou's eyes widened in surprise. He hadn't expected Kiyotaka to jump in, and neither had Kōenji. But the idea of an even larger bet was too tempting for either of them to resist.

"Alright, you're on!" Sudou said, grinning. "But don't think I'll go easy on you just because you're some quiet guy in the back of the class."

Kōenji nodded in agreement, his grin widening. "Ayanokoji, you surprise me! But very well, I accept your challenge. Prepare to be dazzled by my extraordinary swimming prowess."

As the deal was struck, the students around them started to cheer, excited to see how this impromptu race would play out. Kiyotaka remained calm, knowing that he had set the stage for something interesting. He wasn't particularly motivated by the points, but the opportunity to observe how Sudou and Kōenji would react to losing was too good to pass up.

The students lined up at the edge of the pool, ready for the race. Mr. Hoshinomiya, oblivious to the bet that had been made, blew the whistle, signaling the start of the race.

Sudou, true to his reputation as a former basketball player, launched himself into the water with sheer force, his powerful strokes propelling him forward at an impressive speed. Kōenji, with his characteristic flair, swam with elegance, his movements smooth and efficient as if he were part of the water itself.

But it was Kiyotaka who surprised everyone. He slipped into the water with minimal splash, his strokes measured and precise. He wasn't the fastest in terms of sheer speed, but his technique was flawless, and he conserved energy in a way that allowed him to maintain a steady, rapid pace. As the laps continued, it became clear that Kiyotaka was pulling ahead, leaving both Sudou and Kōenji in his wake.

The onlookers began to cheer louder as Kiyotaka's lead widened. Sudou, determined not to lose, pushed himself harder, his muscles burning as he tried to catch up. Kōenji, on the other hand, seemed less concerned with winning and more with maintaining his elegant form, his ego content with being admired even if he wasn't in the lead.

As Kiyotaka touched the edge of the pool, completing the final lap, the crowd erupted in cheers. He had won by a significant margin. Kōenji followed shortly after, still looking as if he had barely exerted himself, while Sudou finished third, panting heavily from the effort.

"Whoa, Ayanokoji! That was incredible!" one of the students shouted, clearly impressed.

Kiyotaka climbed out of the pool, his expression as neutral as ever. "I just got lucky," he said simply, brushing off the praise.

Sudou, still catching his breath, looked at Kiyotaka with a mixture of frustration and grudging respect. "You're one sneaky guy, Ayanokoji. But a bet's a bet. You earned it."

Kōenji, ever the showman, simply shrugged with a flamboyant smile. "It appears I've been bested. But worry not, for I still looked magnificent in the water, did I not?"

The group laughed, the tension of the competition dissipating as they all relaxed. But before anyone could move on, Suzune Horikita, who had been quietly watching from the side, approached Kiyotaka. Her expression was unreadable, but there was a hint of something in her eyes—curiosity, perhaps, or maybe even respect.

"You're not just a passive observer, are you, Ayanokoji?" she said, her voice low enough that only he could hear.

Kiyotaka met her gaze, his calm demeanor unshaken. "Sometimes it's necessary to act."

Horikita studied him for a moment before speaking again. "If you're so confident in your abilities, how about another bet?"

This caught Kiyotaka's attention. He raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "What kind of bet?"

Horikita crossed her arms, her tone challenging. "Fastest time between the two of us. If I win, you give me half of your points from today. If you win... I'll treat you to dinner tomorrow."

Kiyotaka considered the offer, the corner of his mouth curling up ever so slightly. The idea of a bet with Horikita was more appealing than he would have expected. She was clearly competitive, but there was something else—a desire to understand him, perhaps, or to challenge herself.

"Alright," Kiyotaka agreed, his voice steady. "But don't say I didn't warn you."

The other students, sensing something interesting, gathered around as Horikita and Kiyotaka took their positions at the edge of the pool. Mr. Hoshinomiya, now fully aware of the excitement, decided to indulge the class and signaled the start of their race.

Horikita was fast, her strokes powerful and precise. She was clearly skilled, her movements fluid and controlled. But Kiyotaka, with his almost mechanical efficiency, quickly took the lead. He swam with the same methodical precision that had won him the first race, his pace unyielding.

As they both touched the edge of the pool at the end of the lap, it was clear who the winner was. Kiyotaka had finished first, just seconds ahead of Horikita. The class erupted in cheers again, but Kiyotaka paid them little attention. He climbed out of the pool, offering a hand to Horikita as she emerged.

She accepted his hand, her expression neutral, but there was a spark of something in her eyes—determination, perhaps, or grudging respect. "You're full of surprises, Ayanokoji," she said, a small smile playing at the corners of her mouth. "I guess I owe you dinner."

Kiyotaka nodded, a faint smile on his lips as well. "I'm looking forward to it."

As they walked away from the pool, the rest of the class continued to buzz with excitement, the events of the day providing more than enough entertainment and speculation. But for Kiyotaka and Horikita, the bet had forged a subtle connection, one that neither of them fully understood yet.

And as they both knew, in a place like this, even the smallest connections could lead to something much larger.
